I think it's just a low-end thermal camera combined with some image processing to make guesses about what things are.

No, definitely not. That would only find pipes. This is a full blown stud finder. Plus it's too close to the wall and has no lens.

It had already been discussed in a other thread, search for Walabot on this forum. It uses a GHz planar antenna array.

I may be wrong about the technology used in this case, but you're also incorrect. Thermal cameras work pretty well as stud finders.

As far as I understand it is the same technology used for hostage/urban rescue. The secret sauce is in the software. I think Walabot and their dev kit is a bonanza for experimenting in this area, but TX power would need to be pumped up a bit and antenna array may need a rework. But the platform is there.

I got one of these on the spur of the moment as it seemed cheap for what it is and on a gamble that it is hackable.

As a stud finder it is a complete and utter disaster. Avoid at all costs if you actually want to use it for that.

I really hope their open API stuff works with the DIY version...
