Wierd HV Battery

So I found a US based company called Excell Battery that remakes most types of odd/rare and vintage battery types with modern chemistries, including B batteries for old tube and early transistor radios. They are pricey but the price seems to vary a lot depending on the seller.

What I don't get however, is what on earth is this and what is it used for? Tube stuff?

Check out a NEDA 497.  510 Volts. 

But yeah.  Tubes.  Photoflash was primary target of the NEDA 489, but lots of high voltage batteries existed to run vacuum based electronics.  Photomultiplier.  Geiger.   Long list of applications.  Fading rapidly into the past.

They do..but only in traditional carbon zinc (which is why it's cheaper). Ew...
