What are you listing to? - Music while you work
« on: May 22, 2018, 10:47:44 pm »
I cant not have some tunes on while working, fortunately I work from home most of the time.  My wife can always tell how my day has been by the type and volume of what I'm listening to.  If its 80's pop/rock/British invasion/new wave its been a good day.  If its Metallica/Black Sabbath, Godsmak maybe not as nice a day.  A coworker on in NY (I'm in CA) was complaining he was the only one working on our team this morning so sent a instant message to me of Eric Carmen All By My Self, which lead me to me explaining how that was a rip of Rochmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2 (second movement).  Its been a few years since I've listened to Rochmaninoff, so after revisiting No. 2, I had to listen to my favorite No. 3.

In my home shop, I have 400 watts of audio.  I found the dynamic range limits several times today  :bullshit:   ^-^

I like 70s and 80s rock mostly, but my taste in music is very wide ranging. Where my bench is though, there is currently no way to access my collection with any quality, so I listen to Z106.7 on a 25 watt Sherwood receiver with two Radio Shack Minimus 7 speakers. It works fine. I learned long ago that you don't always have to blast music as loud as possible to enjoy it. Heavy metal though, can sometimes possess people I think.

I try to match music to my mood when working too. Default mode is 80/90s pop rock like RHCP. Feeling angsty it will be Die Antwoord or maybe some grunge, industrial, or dark psy trance. In the morning I like ambient, downtempo, synthwave, or lofi hiphop. The best though when I am trying to be/feeling super productive is progressive psy trance.

When I am doing woodworking I like DJ Dadmagent. He does songs I would generally not listen too, but with powertools over the top. Hilarious. Kinda obscure, but some of my friends are friends with him.

I absolutely cannot write software when music is playing or a radio is talking. Radio talk especially blathering on and on prevents you from thinking your own thoughts. Stops you from designing stuff.

I am the opposite, too quite and I think to much and can't get anything real done. If I have something to occupy part of my brain it is easier to achieve more of a flow state where I can just code without thinking about it. Electronics on the other hand I don't know well enough to do that yet, some distraction still helps with lateral thinking though.

I listen to a bit of just about everything from folk to heavy metal but typically gravitate toward classic rock. If I'm trying to write code though I need either silence, or soft classical music is nice sometimes.

Deduct 1 point from your man card for admitting you listen to ABBA.  Its okay, but you shouldn't admit to it.

I've been fortunate enough to see PF in concert twice, 1989 Delicate Sound of Thunder and 1994 Pulse.  I'm a huge Floyd fan.

They were all broke up before they hooked me  :) but we have the group Pink Floyd Experience downunder and been to see them twice. Both times come way without a voice and bruised ribs from the ol' girls elbow.  :horse:
Their The Wall concert was bloody fantastic.
Anyways found all their stuff from almost the beginning of time on the 'net. Early stuff was way out there.  :)

Second record album I ever bought was "Black Sabbath". First concert I ever went to was Black Sabbath. February 13, 1974 Louisville, KY. Going to rock concerts was a big thing in those days, from 1976 to 1984 I saw a lot of the big names at least once. I don't remember a Pink Floyd concert, but that doesn't mean I didn't go to one.

Just listening again to the finest performance of the Brahms Requiem I have ever heard.  Maestro Blomstedt is conducting from memory.

Well, the question was what music do you listen do, not like :) If I'm in a self-hate mood then I need something to suffer to.

Actually, that's not true. It's a little acknowledged reality that nearly all men secretly love ABBA. Embrace what you love and share it! A-ha! And I thought this was a safe place :)

It depends.

When I'm reading or writing a lot of text, I like to listen to classical music or some post rock/metal, no vocals.
When I'm grinding along some design or code, I usually put something heavier up like progressive metal or `djent` (with extensions into death metal).
Sometimes when I'm a bit tired of listening I also work in just silence.

"Bad" music is particularly off putting to my concentration, as it annoys the crap out of me.

depends on the period.
If i'm getting into a new artist, everything from that artist.
Otherwise, my usual playlist or the radio. I listen to the radio a lot. Not for music, but talk shows

Cant listen to the talk shows in the US anymore, the politics are so polarized and biased (in either direction) you have no idea what the truth is, its all fake news anymore.  Then you have all the tragedy's and terrible news that the media lives for.  Too depressing, just give me some music, the world will go on and I will be happier to not pay attention to it.

because you don't have Radio24 ;D It's the only radio staion i can listen to. There are a lot of speakers there that are competent, have a sense of humor and irony. i don't care who talks, they are really entertaining.
On the morning commute, one of the guys is a journalist i really like, especially when he heats up and start with a neverending stream of words, then another show until 11.
at noon this other guy which does extravagant surveys based on the news of the day.
At three a musician speaks about famous people, or book characters, or operas and narrates their lives.
At six, our version of the howard stern snow. Great while commuting.
truly a great radio

When I worked in a masheen shop, the owner would play classing 70's and 80's American rock, until Highway to Hell would come on and he'd shut it off. I asked him why and he said, "I'm NOT on a highway to hell..."

When the towers fell the music died and I just listen to talk radio now. I try to get a balance with Dr. Savage, Armstrong and Getty, Dr. Drew, and Chip Franklin.

That's probably the best performance of Stairway to Heaven I've seen.

I don't know how it was done, but that Vimeo version doesn't have the annoying CBS "eyeball" watermark, like the copy I got from youtube. I'll have to see if I can get a copy to replace what I have.

watch prince unleash a guitar solo at the end ... unreal. That solo is longer than the song is originally. That guy could improvise..

Hi,

Of course, the music I play changes with my mood and with the gene I'm doing.
Try to program something like batch files or some Arduino code that can be it better to be quiet, that requires too much brain power from me.

But otherwise this is what is passing by a lot.
New Order
David Bowie
Alex Smoke
Johannes Heil
Comsat Angels
Stone Roses
Underworld
Simple Minds
Faithless
The Cure

Uhg, yeah I always liked Time, but lately it's really starting to hit home.

Then don't watch this;

It does hit home, though with me, it will probably be the opposite.  I am 9 years older than my wife.  The odds do favor her outliving me.  That is why I try to make every day count.  The past is gone, the future hasn't come yet.  Today is the 'present' and I try to make it a wonderful present every day for SWMBO.

Music wise: classic rock, progressive jazz, classical and inspirational music when I am in the mood.  Mostly, quiet reigns.  Inevitably, i will spend time on the phone with fellow technicians and site contacts when doing phone/remote fixes and troubleshooting.  Can't have music in the background.

I usually list slightly backwards, it is more comfortable. I might sometimes list a bit to the side, if sitting on a bad chair and if my butt is asleep.

As to music, I need silence when I think hardly.  When I'm prototyping or exploring, I might listen to classical music (not opera; sopranos get on my auditory nerves), or some Finnish bands with stories in the lyrics.

Hi kj7e,

Thank you for pointing me to the Talking Heads video!

A lot of sound engineering can learn some lessons from this video...

Kind regards,

Tried listening to music from The Amp Hour, a high pitched guy and a gruff guy. Only seems to work in the car.   :)

Pink Floyd... the 'Time' lyrics that get me are

"You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun"

 - not totally applicable but makes you pause and re-assess...

Went and saw Roger Waters in Feb, glad I did after not being able to see Pink Floyd in years gone by.. (multiple of ten years probably  :-DD)
Not easy, not hard, just need to be incentivised.

Was gunna say Pink Floyd Money  >:D but I hate that track.
Anything else from Floyd, hell yeah excepting Time which reminds us of our mortality.  :(
Have been listening to PF for decades now. But the most brain blasting is "One of my turns".
However I find it hard to listen to PF while doing something else - doesn't work for me. Either listen and feel it, or else. But it is ok for everything else.
But... Also David Bowie, Stevie Wonder, Talk Talk, Led Zeppelin, ELO, Madame Shirley Bassey, Anne Lennox and such.

I know exactly what you mean, one thing that bothers me when I try to listen to music and my wife is around, she keeps wanting to start a conversation through the songs.  Sometimes you just need to sit back and listen.  I work alone, at home, locked in my office all day, only co-workers are 2300 miles away.  All day I type and look at screens, mostly numbers and code, the music is my company/background noise.  Without it I would go nuts, more than I already am.

Its a blues day, some Joe Bonamassa with Beth Hart, and cant forget Popa Chubby;

Reminds me of how my other half seems to always try to chat while I'm trying to write code. I just start to wrap my brain around what I'm trying to do and get into the zone, then she asks me a question and I completely lose my place and have to start over. Wash, rinse, repeat, then "You've been working on that for 2 hours, when will you be done?!" Well, maybe after I've had 30 minutes to actually focus on it. *sigh*  There are worse problems to have, judging by the way guys I know vent about their wives and girlfriends.

Back in my teens, I was good for 20wpm, but it was only used to to get my Extra, never used it since.  Just an interesting tidbit, the true term is International code as real Morse code was used on telegraphs and incorporated pauses between clicks, International code was modified Morse code to make use of the continuous tones from demodulated continuous wave RF.

Ha that's very recognizable: https://heeris.id.au/2013/this-is-why-you-shouldnt-interrupt-a-programmer/
Be glad it's chat though. When someone asks something in person, you need to pay active attention to take the conversation in.
With chat it's your choice to reply within 10seconds or 5 minutes. I usually choose for the latter. I turned off all notifications of Whatsapp, as I will check it regularly at my own time when I feel like it. This helps wonders for concentration. Just do explain to people why you do this, as a downside of all this "always connected" applications is that we expect (no DEMAND) attention and replies in an instant, even though we're not talking to them in person.

Despite offtopic, I think it's closely related to my choice of music when working. I often choose for music that can create sort of an isolated barrier while having enough interesting texture to it. Depending on my mood it may swing from classical, post rock, progressive rock/metal, psychedelic rock, as long as it is very atmospheric. Having grown accustomed to this for years, I started to notice that more mainstream songs sound unusual for me when vocals just keep on going and chorus are repeated 3 times within the span of 4 minutes. I've been used to unregular song structures, and if there is vocals at all; ones that take it very .. very.... sloooowly.

As people are posting some music and albums here, I am also throwing up one of my  favorite instrumental post-rock albums:

Also, as a random comment. I am surprised by the amount of "bands music" here. Are people that listen to more modern electronic music suddenly hiding now, or is there some kind of correlation between engineers/EEs and music?

At the home workbench if it's not a SKY movie I have on in the background I am listening to some easy listening music like Alan Jackson.......I like rock/pop/country but it can't be heavy stuff when I am concentrating on my electronics.

Last movie on that I was 'listening' to was 1968 Planet of The Apes. I find that a familiar movie is easy to follow without looking at a screen.

90 GB music on my PC, fed to an 70's Pioneer and two KEFs. Most is blues, bluesrock, hardrock, southern rock, progrock.
Favourits: Rory Gallager, lynyrd skynyrd, Allman brothers, Dream theater, MSG, Rainbow, deep purple, Satriani, ZZ-top, AC/DC, Gary Moore, Clapton, BB-king, JJ-Cale, Iron Maiden. As long as it has a lot of guitar (I play guitar)
Southern rock and blues(rock) is always good. Hardrock most times, progrock only if I it is an easy job. Music helps me thinking  by blocking the rest of sounds. (I do not have a short concen...hey look, a butterfly  :) )

When I'm banging out some CAD or a KiCad project, I like to jam to some Progressive Electro House / Chillwave / Chillstep. Most of it is very background music-y with very sparse vocals. I find that it helps me focus more on my work. Granted, I still like my share of 70s/80s/90s but these have been surprisingly helpful.

;D Ah well, I'm not alone with anime music then...I was a bit ashamed to come out with this! :-+

So here's my usual playlist (in no particular order):
Selected anime op, ed and OST, especially anything by Yuki Kajiura/Kalafina
Pere Ubu
Radiohead
Talking heads / David Byrne
Alt-J
Brian Eno
They Might Be Giants
Philip Glass
A lot of old "new wave" bands...showing my age here

Then some classical music (mostly Bach, but after Mozart I more or less skip to modern/contemporary - Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Berio etc.)

ETA: About the original thread title, it's been I think 15 years I've listed something to a printer, so it's the monitor for me.

She's great.

Floor Jansen has a fantastic voice also, but too many "body mods" for my taste. And it has been getting worse. However, her first performance of "Ghost Love Score" is almost impossible to forget.

Tuomas Holopainen though, wow just an awesome symphonic heavy metal composer. I do prefer the earlier years of Nightwish though.

This is my favourite one.
I am not into jazz but this one seems an exception.

David Sanborn Live from the Montreux 1984

I like how they play at the middle to the end.

Here's a joke: If I want to listen to modern music I just Type in Bart Baker at the beginning and i find that the parodies sound a lot better than the originals.

For some reason when I read the question I thought of Jean Michele Jarre. Funny you should mention him.

I like a little bit of organ as well:

David Bowie - Ashes to ashes
Simple Minds - Don't you forget about me
Paul Young - Wherever I lay my hat
The Neville Brothers - Bird On A Wire
Commodores - Nightshift

Actually the last one is more vocal than organ.

At the dayjob, it's mostly metal (we have a *really* good internal mail list that's always got plenty of suggestions).

Concentrating it's deep house / trance / etc. (One suggestion, the "music for programming" podcast does some great ambient stuff.

When I'm banging out some CAD or a KiCad project, I like to jam to some Progressive Electro House / Chillwave / Chillstep.

Same here, although I've switched almost exclusively to synthwave and chillwave. It's like my brain phase-locks to the music, and house music is too fast. Youtube users 'Asthenic' and 'NewRetroWave' put out some very good mixes. Droid Bishop and Com Truise are on rotation too, I particularly like this video:

Good for nearly a couple of hours after which I'll probably put White Eagle on. I can't work if the background music has vocals, it distracts me.

All the EE I know love Dreamtheater:

I often perform some air drumming solo when the hot soldering iron still smokes.

Classical music, especially Baroque and Contemporary.
Just now I'm listening to: Ulrich Leyendecker, Symphony No 3.

Other music I love listening: Glass, Nyman, Reich, Krono Quartet, Murcof, Richter, Jóhannsson, ...
but even SOME dubstep and jungle!

Tangerine Dream is good work music (both computer and electronics) for me also. I also prefer instrumental music, classical+new music, etc. for the same reason.

I mainly listen to Radio Paradise while working... a good eclectic mix of music that suits my middle-aged tastes.

Sometimes, I just want talk so will then listen to Science360 Radio.

Amazing, I loved it!
But I'd swear I'd heard something like that before, but from another artist.

Yesterday I found this channel:

It's not what it looks like (It's not trance music):

For some reason when I read the question I thought of Jean Michele Jarre. Funny you should mention him.

I like a lot of different kinds of 'electronic' music.

Just a synchronicity, or not, who know.

Like many here, I prefer silence while I'm doing something that actually requires concentration. Reading, analysis, etc. I'll occasionally put on some Coltrane or Bach to drown out extraneous noise if there's something distracting going on nearby. Instrumental music doesn't seem to prevent me from focusing. I admit to avoiding vocal music when I really need to bear down. How others can puzzle things out with heavily-compressed, often-distorted talk radio going on in the background is baffling to me.

For more physical and less cerebral shop work, repetitive things like hammer and nails, stripping wire, cleanup, tearing down boxes... well, one has to stay motivated and on task. There are many ways to skin a cat.

also keygen music:

some people find these to be piercing to the ear, so that's why there are often YTPMV versions of these songs; you can find them by searching "<song name> ytpmv" on youtube.

WTF?

YTPMVs, or YouTube Poop Music Videos, are an evolution from the original YouTube Poop (YTP). Put simply, a YTPMV is when you pitch shift any given sounds ("sources", usually anime girl screaming scenes) to match the tune of an existing or new song. In a YTPMV, great emphasis is placed on making the result sound nice, and often the result is more pleasing to listen to than the original song.

YTPMVs have had an important role in popularizing chiptune (keygen) music, which are widely thought to lack in sound character and sound "piercing" to the ear.

The human voice also distracts me a little, but:

"The twelve-tone musical scale, upon which a large portion of all music (western popular music in particular) is based, may have its roots in the sound of the human voice during the course of evolution, according to a study published by the New Scientist. Analysis of recorded speech samples found peaks in acoustic energy that mirrored the distances between notes in the twelve-tone scale."

Human voice/brain, harmonic waves and evolution. Math is everywhere.  :)

A contemporary hispanic-flavored Christmas song performed with comical non-Spanish accents by The Lispers.
And with heavy underscore from James Bond 007 with some Tchaikovsky Nutcracker thrown in for good measure.

Putting in another vote for synthwave. Not because the faux 1980s style is necessarily more compelling than others, but because it tends to be non-vocal, have a good beat, and above-average complexity. These are qualities that seem to enhance focus ... or at least don't distract much. Good quality noise-cancelling headphones help to establish the bubble.

Good example track: Nowtro - Tears Don't Fall in Space

Go-to Internet radio station (zero ads or announcements): Synthwave Radio

Excellent meter, which I have also been using and the fan is definitely noisy. But my Vision Mantis has a really noisy fan - drives my nuts. Having found perfect MR11 replacement LED globes over the old halogen lamps, I want to disconnect the fan or put in a less turbulent fan, but I am not sure how to disassemble the Mantis without effecting the optics (ie: risky business).
