What brands of glasses do you prefer?
« on: February 28, 2016, 12:52:43 pm »
I want to buy new glasses. I don't know, what model of sunglasses to choose. What glasses are considered fashionable, reliable and comfortable now ?
Interesting to know your preferences on this occasion. Thank you!

If you want them to be fashionable then ask your girlfriend (or even a random girl in the store).

For me, it is all about function.  In the car I sometimes wear a pair of Coccoons over my prescription glasses (Varilux S series 4D progressive lenses with Transitions).  The Transitions lenses only respond well to UV light, so they don't get very dark in the car; back when I wore photogray glass lenses I never needed sunglasses because they darkened based on visible light levels.

I go for big thick Oakleys. Doesn't let the light in round the edges and the lenses don't distort the light towards the external edges.

Depends on the budget. Cartier do make some gorgeous sunglasses  8)

Can not go wrong with RayBan. There frames and lenses have a very good reputation, always lead fashion and don't go out of fashion just become retro fashion.

How can you not love an eyewear manufacturer with 'engineering' in the title? And they supply the USAF.

Tell me about it! My young daughter pinched my old 1980 Aviator Ray-Bans.

My Raybans gave me a nasty face rash. Had to get plastic Oakleys.

I wear glasses with Seiko digital progressive lenses and I go to Walmart and buy clip on polarized sunglasses for being outside.  I tried transitions, but spending a lot of time in my company van, they don't work.  The Walmart clip on's work well and are fairly cheap.  I have bought the really cheap flea market ones but they don't work as well and fall apart much faster than the Walmart stuff.  I have a couple of UVEX safety glasses for wearing over my glasses that are clear and tinted for outside use, but definitely not a fashion statement.

The only thing that concerns me with glasses is how much beer they hold

Just wait a few more years.........

As to photochromatic I am currently using Transitions II coating and it does darken in the vehicle nicely. I have to use a higher refractive index lens, and the coating matches nicely with it, though the highest index lens and coating is too expensive for the reduction in mass, 30g of lens and glass is fine, all I would lose is 5g at double the price.

Not on fashion but thought I would mention. The best glasses I've ever had are the cheapies (typically CR-39 lens material is the cheapest you can get); s you pay more for a lens material, you're paying for higher refraction index to get a thinner lens, not optical quality (which typically goes down with refraction index).

They don't tell you that CR-39 has the highest optical quality (Abbe value), highest scratch resistance, lowest reflectance out of any plastic lens.
The impact resistance, and UV blocking good too.

Abbe value is a measure of chromatic aberration btw.... If you're in front of the monitor and look at the screen at the corner of your lens (with glasses on as normal) and you see color shifting on lines... that's chromatic aberration.... can make a huge difference for some people.

The only downside for general use, they are the thickest as the refraction index is lowest.  I have a a correction factor of 4.25... if your much above that then i'd go to a thinner lens. CR-39 at 4.25 might bee too thick for some people, but for me chromatic aberration drives me nuts.

I hear freeform figured lens are awesome, but haven't tried them yet.

I am actually using Transitions II as well, but it doesn't get dark enough in the car for me.  But my eyes are more sensitive to light than I would like due to pigmentary glaucoma and some of the drugs used to treat it.  Photogray glass worked better for that, but I can no longer wear those lenses due to other factors.

No idea what brand they are, but I've got some with scratch resistive glass and a frame i can bend in all sorts of weird directions without them breaking, great for a messy workshop.
As for shades, I rock Aviators with prescription lenses :)

My last pair I bought from the hardware store (Bunnings) in the safety equipment, tinted safety glasses.

I finally broke down and got prescription sunglasses last summer, and went with a pair of wraparound Wiley X frames with tinted and polarized lenses from RX-Safety.com.  I don't know about fashionable, but they're well-made, comfortable, and ANSI Z87 rated.  You get a little bit of distortion at the edges of wraparound lenses, but not enough for me to be bothered by.

As a minor tangent, I'd highly recommend RX-Safety in general for anyone looking for prescription safety glasses. They have lots of lens and coating options, and you can order as many bare frames as you want to try on at home, then when you decide what you like just send them back and order your lenses.  I think my finished glasses shipped about two days after I placed the final order.

Living in Hawaii, I concur on the keeping the light out from the edges. ESS and Oakleys get my vote  :-+. If you investigate, you can get prescription lenses for any particular model you want.  Both are tough (my ESS did well with daily wear in mideast and SW Asia).

Photochromic lenses are great - but in warm temperatures they may not get as dark as you like. And in cold weather (not a problem in Hawaii) they can get really dark, but take a long time to clear up. My preference is having dedicated polarized sunglasses, and photochromic regular glasses.

Ray-Ban 8306 "carbon" - polarised lenses. Have these since a couple of years. (Not the exact same model, but it's pretty much the same). Polarised lenses are great for driving or anything near water! Also: they are very light and do not have a thick plastic frame on the side (I hate Wayfarer's because of that! How can anyone drive with those? You can't see sh*t from your sides...)  ;D
