I just downloaded, installed and play around with Google Earth 5 http://earth.google.com/. My fren recommended me last time but i never really have time for it. I can see some of the benefits/applications for it. For example:
1) Finding shortest route to a safe place in case of any unlikely event occuring
2) Find where the possibility of National Treasure
3) Plan on where we want on vacation in the future
4) Global mass destruction etc
5) Finding where our frens are
So i'm thinking and wondering where are my EEVBlog frens are located and scattered around the world. Since i'm in the edge of jungle here, i would appreciate if the fellow frens here could locate themselves. My location is Latitude 4°26'38.56"N, Longitude 118°37'0.80"E. Thats the best i can get, if anybody can suggest better way of expressing the location, Thank you.
FYI: I will add your location to my Google Earth so i can see how far and scattered we are.
Thanx for your support. Cheers ;)
and hope nobody is going to drop a Nuke on me!

Thanx guys. Now i can see something. Using the ruler tool, DJPhil is about 1308 miles away from Time (in picture, i've added the text, coz Google earth didnt show it when we look from the moon), and migsantiago is not so far down below. An hour ago i'm checking among the famous countries in our local news such as Israel, Iran, Iraq. i can see roughly how they live there and the population managed. Now i can have the world at my fingertip!

You can do it interactively on maps.google.com. Create a custom map.

I wonder if there is a Wordpress or SMF app that allows users to plot their location?
Dave.
-
I've added a map button to the main page sidebar (under "Follow EEVblog"). It shows the locations of all visitors in the last 24 hours.
Nice!
Dave.
-
Cool.
But, either it has me misplaced by 40 miles, or it skipped me and there is someone on here from Scottsdale Arizona.
Is there?
-
I lived with my Uncle near where that Scottsdale pin is at before moving to Edmond, Oklahoma in '97. It appears to be a little off on my location too.
- Patrick
-
I believe it's based on your IP address, and that would be where your ISP is I guess.
I shows me as being in Tasmania!
But that's not surprising given that my company is/was a Tasmanian company and still has an office there.
Dave.
-
Even if every pin there is off by a couple hundred miles, it's still a pretty darn impressive span for your little blog. :)
-
I was using ClustrMap on my website but this Google one is much better.

Brilliant! It's got me pretty much bang on.
This is neat!

I still like the realistic'ness of the Google Earth. We can see our Mr Mtron is dwelling under the tree. :D just kidding MTron.

and here is the NASA "Launchpad" that i struggle to search last night. Its like i fly over there last night.

LOL...i was going to use a few more significant digits to place the pin just over my room...but i figured that was close enough....
or maybe it is over my room....perhaps i have a secret underground bunker in my backyard... ::) ::)

And yes, that location is between a science museum and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. :D

Shafri, I'm glad to see you falling in love with google earth just as I have! It's great fun. :D
I wanted to mention Celestia (http://www.shatters.net/celestia/). If you've ever been curious about astronomy it's like google universe! You can add map data for the local planets (they start out fairly simple for the sake of speed) and zoom around between stars.
Google earth does something similar, but it's more simple, it just flips you over and points you outward. I think they might have a lunar explorer too, but it's nothing like Celestia.
Hope you like it. :)

Yeah, the IP locator is kinda wrong. I think that Shafri's map will be better! :-X ;D
-
yup, with condition that you search your location manually on earth and post it here :)

Thanx! now i got one famous person on the map 8). Hmmmmmm, i wonder where the EEVBlog admin located. Tried to figure out the tunnel he usually went into during drivetime rant, but goggling turned out 8 (road) tunnels in Sydney IIRC, none seem familiar. I think i was playing FBI job for a while :D
ps: forgot what was the movie title starred by Will Smith where satellite try to trace his where about.

the drawback of the software is that the map is like 1-2 years outdated. My currently completed new home is still a flat land when watched from this software. If i point exactly to my new home location, everybody will think i'm a homeless :D

Don't worry. A bulldozer will arrive shortly to make your house conform to Google's reality again.

Can we give and the coordinates of the Summer house ? :D :D :D

Finland is often called as "country of thousands of lakes", you can see from satellite images what it means. There isn't a natural pathway to open sea, like to Gulf of Finland, but I believe there is a man-made channel available.
