Well, that is just embarrassing, isn't it?  :D
Another reason to use SMD, I guess.

Maybe its a 6 pin package, 3 pins out the bottom and out the top  :o

Could be useful somewhere ..................................

I've seen similar mistakes on other datasheets. My guess is that an engineer supplied the diagram, but the technical author inserted it into the document without really looking at it. Then the document is published without being properly reviewed.

That is, why it is nice to have conventions for technical drawings :) Since the pins are drawn as solid lines, one can assume that it is in fact the bottom view and that the person dropping the picture into the document made a mistake - most likely using a template that had e.g. an SOT package in that place.

It looks like a TI mistake. Selecting the graphic highlights an outline that encapsulates the "Bottom View" text in the graphic, while "Top View" is actual text in the PDF.

To add to the confusion, compare the table on page 3 with the graphic on page 38.

Yes. This level of incompetence is what keeps the human race teetering on the edge of oblivion.

I don't think the original poster was being serious about the death penalty FFS.

Coincidentally I just bought one of these over the weekend:

http://www.nteinc.com/specs/1900to1999/pdf/nte1900.pdf

The pin out seems to correspond to the bottom view in your illustration, but there does seem to be an assumption that the reader knows how to read such mechanical drawings with orthogonal projections.

What does that word even mean?  :-DD

BTW I think it is clearly the top view of a picture - which is the bottom view.

Indeed. I suggest applying the logic below:

1. If you do not see one of the many English or AU flags next the the poster, exit this test. If you see a US flag, proceed with caution.
2. If the post is defamatory or incites violence in any way, it's probably a joke.
3. If the person posts the same comment several times or writes page long rants on it in unrelated threads, they're a nut job and you should probably actually be shot.

Note: 3 is not a joke.

TI has done that with TO-3 and TO-220 package drawings also.  Their terrible datasheets go back decades.

And then there was the time they released a new integrating ADC advertised to *not* generate positive and negative zero ... which generated positive and negative zero.

I think they are also the ones who published power supply rejection graphs in place of common mode rejection graphs.  Since that would make the performance worse than reality, it had to be an actual mistake.

Meh, could be worse, they could have said "side view" just for extra confusion.

It will, however, have done the rounds with half a dozen sign-offs required from various departments. It will have sat, unread, on the desks of everybody who has to sign off on it until the poor tech writer trying to get it out of the door has told each of them, three times, that the deadline for publication passed two weeks ago.

Been there, done that, for a large manufacturer of networking equipment that shall remain nameless to protect the guilty. This is why if a large organization wants tech writing out of me nowadays they'll have to pay my interim-management/herding-cats day rate.

what to do in my case with number 1?

Someone should dig out the old National Linear databook, I bet the mistake is in it!

No mistake in the National original. I looked it up. A 2010 revision from National shows only the "Bottom View" label, with the same graphic as the TI datasheet.

I say load a gun with those very packages, pointing whatever way the diagram tells you is up.  Do the pins go first or not?  You be the judge.  :-DD

That's not always a sure bet. I've been using a BGA sensor with inverted pin numbering. Meaning that A1 and L10 are flipped.

Here is Signetics famous WOM datasheet.  It actually made it to print.  I remember seeing it in the fresh databooks when I was in school.  It bears close reading because it's packed with jokes.  It was never meant to make it to print but just to make their marketing department realize how lackadaisical they were about proofing their publications.  ::)

"Shot"?

I suppose no one is allowed to make a mistake, eh? Could be a sliiiiight over-reaction to a data sheet. So, can we shoot you, next time you slip up? :p

The National "Fast" and "Damn Fast" buffer amplifier datasheet is amusing.  I have an old enough databook to include it and I think I have the Signetics WOM datasheet as well.
