I don't like Altium..... but
« on: September 15, 2018, 01:53:41 pm »
OK, I'm running LabCenter Proteus which is pretty good for medium sized boards which make up most of my work but it's expensive for me, about 300 bucks a year, if I remember, to renew the licence. I guess I could just sit on the current program but I like upgrades and some of the refinements over the years have been worth it.
Well, I see Altium and AutoDesk are battling it out for us middle of the EDA road designers. Now I see that Eagle (which I like less than mud but I haven't used it in ten years) is down to something like $100 a year renewal and AutoDesk is a one time buy of ..... wait.... drum roll... $495.  That's pretty tempting, it even has simulation. So what's the bottom line for you guys (and gals) who use this 'thing'. Is it complete crap full of bugs or can you actually do work with it. I feel like for 495 bucks somewhere down the line I'm going to get royally screwed but it's only 495 bucks so I'm tempted.

Any thoughts?

My best advice is that I can't really advice you ... You are the only one that can judge what are your own requirements, expectations.
The fact that you want to switch sides (changing ECAD software is not an easy thing, you have to think to maintaining old projects, too) shows that you are determined.

Why not use that determination and take the one month trial license that Circuit Studio offer, to judge for yourself if it's worth the trouble?
Some people are happy enough with Circuit Studio while others not so.
How you will see it, well, it's up to you.

I ran Eagle, maybe 12 or 14 years ago but I found it a really cumbersome program. I wonder how it is with Autodesk running it. Since I already have the simulator in Proteus I could keep it just to run sims as I like simulation in Proteus quite a bit. So I might try Altium and Eagle again since they are cheap and I can beat up a trial version.

Anyone try either?
