DAVE????
« on: March 03, 2016, 02:53:04 am »
Why are there 100's of posts of people that have less than 10 posts?
I guess you have no time to clean up the newbees.
BTW I quit  I am out see ya.

There is something about those people that talk back, and reply to themselves... I just can't remember what it is.
Don't ask a question if you aren't willing to listen to the answer.

Bill,

No worries. Stick with it and, if you win, just send it over to me. Easy. :-+

It's going to be impossible to stop people posting in the competition thread.

If I were in Dave's shoes, I'd let everyone go for broke and then when the draw is made, check back on the member to see if their history is within the acceptable parameters.  Their ID would only be known to Dave until they have been vetted.  If successful, then he could turn the screen around for everyone to see.

If the first drawn member doesn't cut the mustard, then he can give his reasons and draw again, without them even knowing they came up.  This stops any direct whinging.

Doing it this way means Dave doesn't have to chase 1,000 entries over the period of the entry phase.  Just one (or maybe 2) at the draw.

Just my 2 cents.

I believe Dave is fully aware of this before he decided the contest, we (as old forum members) experienced this situations many times before. For example below chart in 2013 , just watch the "New Members" spike.  :P

The (supposed to be   :-[) quarterly compiled forum statistics can be found here since 2010 -> Topic: Forum getting too popular?

I will post the damage report once the contest is officially closed.

No point having a live draw in that case. The whole idea of which is to be completely transparent

Fair enough.

I hope I'm around when the draw is made.

... or, then again, maybe I hope I'm not.  :scared:

It's a pain in the ass to give stuff away for free. The court of public opinion is expensive.

BTW, did I miss any posting about the date? Still secret?

This thread inspired me to remove my own post from the contest thread.

When I first read the rules, it looked like there was wiggle room when he said "...If you have less than say 10 post when you post in here, I'll delete you. But don't think that 10 or 11 posts magically gets you in!..." I knew I only had a couple posts, but didn't go back and actually count before I said "I'm In".

Turns out I had only one single post from last year, and the only other posts were from after the contest was announced. Surely I'd be DQ'd anyway, so I removed it myself.

I still contend that this whole giveaway could have been done better. Dave said one of his goals was to increase forum participation, so simply rewarding those who are already participating does not work toward that goal. It also removes many of his casual YouTube subscribers (which presumably account for a healthy chunk of his revenues). In that case, why even make a YouTube video about it? Why even mention it on The Amp Hour podcast? Instead, simply post the rules in the forum where the active members will see it anyway, and the surge of unqualified participants could have been avoided in the first place.

But in the end it's Dave's Forum and Dave's Rules, so I'm happy to comply and simply observe from my non-contributing seat

Well i entered the draw.

I would have been on these forums a lot sooner if i had of known people would be as helpful to me as they have been. I have had a few bad run ins on fourms, looking for help. Totally turned me off coming to any for years. I have been watching dave for quite some time. He is one of the most interesting, funny, and entertaining of all the EE posters. But for prop puroses Adam Savages TESTED channel is one of the ones i watch the most, or DIY props..to get build and fab ideas.

Since my coming here, i have gotten the hardware to make my props more flashy..so i am greatful for everyones help.

and the scope, would help me scope out the gitches, that i run into when making my stuff, instead of using google to go down the list of 1 of 100 issues, where i snotted things up at.

I think it can have the participation improvement goal once those realize that there can be a real benefit to participation. If you are a member that is DQ'd for low posts, maybe being more active would get you into the next one.

At the pace Dave is going, there will be a next one. Manufactures love his audience and giveaways are a cheap form of advertising. The $500k giveaway does not cost Keysight $500k. I would venture to say that the hype and excitement are worth far more than the hard cost of the item given away. Way better than magazines and trade shows IHMO which are crazy expensive.

@Georgitsu

Well you may not win a new oscilloscope but by your action you have won the respect of others..... :-+

The members list give a clear indication of who joined, when and their post count, It would appear that some are on a serious mission and perhaps Dave should have made the criteria for entry greater than 10000 posts in a handful of days, now that would have been a sight to see.

Yep;  I'm one of those "newb's" that posted in the draw forum. Was a forum lurker for years; joined (strangely almost exactly a year ago) and rarely see topics that I feel the need to comment on.

If I get excluded for "not being active enough"  I'm totally fine with that.

It's a contest; There's no expectation to win anything. If I get binned into the "active enough"  and happen to win the thing;  that'd be awesome.  If someone else wins it;  I'll still give them a thumbs up and move on with life.

I'm not even going to try and wade through that "how should the contest be run" thread. Holy cow, what a clusterf****. ;)

I feel for Dave. I refrained from entering because I don't feel that posting in the general chat about vaguely related subject matter counts as a 'contributor'. I also think that there is somebody that will be more in a position to need a scope, as I'd be learning how to use it. I figured I'd find an old one when I get the urge and start the hard way. I did enter the Keysight one, because why not, ya know?

I do think Dave is a great guy to do this and I really hope somebody wins that will genuinely be in need of a scope and will make the best use of it. A student of EE or a tech with some older gear that could use an update. Anyway, good luck to everyone and thanks for being a great Uncle Bob, Dave! ;)
