I'll get started on a video which will likely end up an example of how not to win a scope.

This is a nice giveaway. Too late for me, might be bit hard to justify why i need another. Had this been bit earlier I might have tried, but got myself a Siglent which fills my needs nicely for the moment. For those of you without an oscilloscope: go for it!

How are you choosing the winner? Is it the best video or you just pick a random video?

This is great (as is that dumpster), and choosing the winner that way is better than full randomness, in my opinion.
If I don't win (which is probable) I would like to apply for a position as dumpster cleaner. That dumpster, of course.

You MUST make a 2 minute video (no longer!)

4th guy posted a 3:21 long video
 :o  :o  :o

But wait, there's more! The 12th guy posted a 4:07 video.
 ^-^  ^-^  ^-^

In your face R&S!
:-DD  :-DD  :-DD

Later edit:
So far, the winner is a guy from the second page, with a 11:56 video.

I have calculated that the time it will take me to clean up my "lab" for a presentable video, times the minimum per-hour wage, would cost me more than simply buying a new scope  ;D

Question about restrictions: user from which countries can participate in this giveaway? Do people from Russia have a chance to win and to receive the scope?
Thanks!

I choose not to participate as i guess i can afford the scope if i just save up a while,
Someone that are not fortunate to have a fair salary or lives in a country where this kind of oscillsoscope is unreacheable would, in my opinion, be the best winner of the scope  :-+

Yep, big money, indeed! Especially when you have to pay the taxes for it.
Let's see, for EU this will be 19% VAT + 16% income taxes + some small import fee like 5%. Not sure about the 5% import fee, so let's just ignore it.

That would be about $1750 USD out of the winner's pocket, so better start saving anyway!

I think what's funniest so far is the number of people who's number of posts in the forum is 1.

Or wait, the number of people who have a commercial lab, but don't care to have a scope higher than 10Mhz.

Or wait, the number of people who can't even use a 10MHz scope yet but wants this one really badly.

Oh wait! There's also some people who have broken scopes, that is, who can't take care of a 10Mhz scope, but want this one real bad!!

And some people who think that showing that they have no scope will give them a better chance. That's the funniest! Someone who doesn't have a scope clearly isn't serious about electronics, so why would Dave give them a professional scope anyway.

I think Dave is either crying in embarrassment, or cracking himself up in laugher at these videos.

People with very few posts are a win for both EEVblog and the community, because the giveaway want to attract new users to the community, which is good for everybody. Many of the newcomers will stick to the EEvblog, which will be a win-win for all.

And yes, the fact that some people didn't carefully read the instructions is funny, but also expected with all the win rush of such a great tool. No reason for embarrassment, it's just fun. All these prove that the giveaway is already a success.  :-+

Looking forward for new video entries, good luck!

I'm pretty sure Dave can sort the wheat from the chaff on this one. The number of videos is starting to pile up, almost looks like it might not be a bad idea to pick a top 3 group to make a follow up video to make their case a little better. Community voting perhaps? Feed us to the wolves! :>

It's not a new scope, so I think you wont be paying that amount, and if it is a personal shipment (Dave to you) you'll be paying only VAT (plus clearance fee to your importer). Ask around and coordinate with Dave and you shouldn't pay more than several hundred euros, if you end up paying.

The law may vary from country to country, but I think it doesn't matter if it's new or used. The scope is not a purchase, it is an income, and for any kind of income, one must pay taxes. Of course, being a used scope it can be evaluated much lower than its catalog price, but it can not have zero value, unless we play in the grey area.

In some places, this is even worst. This kind of win will be considered a lottery type income. For a lottery win, the tax is even higher, usually somewhere between 25%-40% instead of the 16% used in that best case scenario calculation. Anyway, the taxes vary widely across the world, and I'm not a bookkeeper, so I might be totally wrong.

Before taxes, one need to win in the first place, so good luck to everyone!

But of course as it's a used unit, out of a dumpster, the declared value would be a lot lower than the price of new unit  ;)

They can only be made / developed with the help of 100k+ Keysight scopes.  ;D

And yes: what happened to the revolutionary water heater?

But what if Dave puts the value down as very low? He doesn't have to tell its real value. It could be a broken piece of equipment. It could be a cheap piece of equipment. Dave just needs to write its value down as low...

Some countries don't care about that, they see it's effectively new and will base it on the retail price.

Huh, that's a nice billt o pay for something that is offered to you.
It's not a new scope, so I think you wont be paying that amount, and if it is a personal shipment (Dave to you) you'll be paying only VAT (plus clearance fee to your importer). Ask around and coordinate with Dave and you shouldn't pay more than several hundred euros, if you end up paying.

But what if Dave puts the value down as very low? He doesn't have to tell its real value. It could be a broken piece of equipment. It could be a cheap piece of equipment. Dave just needs to write its value down as low...

Some countries don't care about that, they see it's effectively new and will base it on the retail price.

Oh well. I think it's very sad that we have big brothers watching out for everything we do and RECEIVE. They want a piece of your life, your money and everything. We are basically still slaves to this system.. Sad to see how things are. I wish people were truly free.

Yours was dug out of a garbage can though (as long as that's not just a backstory) So I don't see how anyone could rationally call that new. Then again this is the government we're talking about.

Too bad my posts from other forums don't transfer over or I'd probably break the post counter.

It seems this contest is appealing to new members. At least for now.

ANyway, I removed my entry (for fear of taxes).
IMHO it would help if Dave took it slightly apart. That way it can be shipped as 'for parts' with no value. OTOH some assembly will be required for the winner.

Nice to see some quality submissions...  I really like...

https://www.eevblog.com/forum/contests/giveaway-rohde-schwarz-rtb2004-oscilloscope/msg1246945/#msg1246945

it's a shame the ink had run out otherwise the waveform print would have been awesome.  The way the amplitude changes in realtime is great.

I'm hoping the uBeam and Solar Roadways entries will come in at some point.

I noticed this also.  How did they find this?   I wonder if they search everyday on "giveaway"?

Nothing inherently wrong with having another scope. The main point it show that you can make good use of a higher end scope.

Of course they would, they don't miss a chance to dig into your pockets, its not just the GST, it all the extra "fees" they add on too ! often ends up being as much as the GST component!

Tell them it's a gift, or a repair,  or any BS they deserve  :--

An import fee for something FREE? what would they charge ?   $00.00 + GST?   :palm:

The sender can declare it's worth ZERO or parts salvage, stuff not available in NZ

I would call NZ customs and ask about it and see what they can do,

and get their name and position, and some sort of written or recorded proof,
in case some clipboard wielding hero changes their mind on the day.

Dave: remove the fuse (or even better: replace it by a broken one), take out the the power cable and declare it as a non working unit with a value of $100.
So even if there is an inspection at customs the unit will not power up, thus they will not be able to discuss the value.
To make it even more believable, send manuals and probes with a  separate small package a few days later and declare as $50 (so it will usually slip through customs).

I agree.

I believe Dave will help out as much as is reasonable - but don't expect him to do anything dodgy or spend hours chasing around for a one-off benefit.  I cannot see him doing anything that might attract negative attention, especially with exporting and importing.  He has a business that does not need more hassles than is due.

From that angle I agree   :-+

It still sux that the winner has not purchased anything
nor bringing something into NZ that impacts jobs, industry or the economy had they bought a locally made equivalent,
a tech product which isn't made there anyway

It's a prize or a gift, why should customs break a citizen's balls about it and demand a cut?    :bullshit:     :--

I've seen and experienced it, and I vote for honest and boring    :-+

I could really use a scope like this right now ... but I don't think I would stand a chance.

Yes I agree there are too many ... I watched everyone!
Everyone I would give the scope to I left a "thanked" to let them now ;-)
There are a lot of very good videos and also a lot of good reasons .... This will be very hard for Dave and David to decide.
Good luck to everyone  :-+

We were discussing it and I think it will likely come down to who can get the most use of an advanced scope like this. i.e. a project or some other thing that can really make use of an advanced 10bit 300MHz mixed signal scope.
But it's also about "the vibe".

When is the closing date/time/TZ?  I was thinking about adding some photos into my video.  Thanks

"Entries close 15th July 2017."

I'm going to assume that is *no earlier* than 15th July 23:59:59 Sydney time.

Just because someone doesn't have a scope at home, doesn't mean they don't know how to use it. I had a 1gHz Agilent almost permanently on my office desk in my previous job. A reasonable scope is a fair wack of money in many countries. I  always had access to scopes through my previous job which I was allowed to borrow when not in use. Unfortunately working for a start-up now, I no longer have that luxury.

Loads of good entries!

Perhaps R&S (I know you are listening  :)) could be encouraged to dump some extra in the dumpster or upgrade Dave with something new so he can dump the R&S1202 which is also a nice scope, albeit it 2CH.

Hey Dave,

Your attempt to attract newbies over to the forum worked swimmingly in my case. One question, I saw this a bit later and will only finish the video today after work which is July 14th in Dallas, TX but is the cutoff your Australian time because then it will be the 15th?

That's why I said/edited *no earlier* in my previous comment.  I suspect Dave wants the best entries possible and isn't aiming to be too pedantic so I imagine that if you are currently on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baker_Island then 23:59:59 local time on July 14th would be acceptable.

I wanted to partecipate, but in the end i won't.
Mixed reasons:
- Fear of the massive import duties on these kind of gifts (but i'm keeping an eye out for mike's giveaway, if he'll be able to do it before brexit, as he said he's not sure he will :-DD)
- Actual need of midrange scope didn't balance out the Fear of the massive tax so it's right that others can get it
but the most important:
- I had THE idea for the video with lots of vibe, but couldn't possibly fit it in 2 minutes (5, i could). So i was conjuring something up, but i didn't have the time to finish it in these two weeks and it wouldn't be as good  :'(

good luck to the partecipants

Dave just unplug the psu from the scope and send it as a broken one for part salvage as an gift.

Then the winner could show that it is broken to the customs authorities, get it nearly tax-free. :phew:

And plugging it back in shouln't be that difficuld.

Asking out of pure curiosity:

I was looking through the other replies (Snoopin' out the competition), and noticed two replies which feature breadboard computers with very similar designs:

Here's my entry. I'm an empty nester who finally has the time and the means to work on some fun projects. I also enjoy producing YouTube videos in the hopes of encouraging others to give it a try. I tried to get one of those DSO 138 kits working but it is just way to flaky. I really enjoy the videos where you call BS on the EV Roadway and other stupid stuff.

https://youtu.be/SbUciYEwgS0

This is my participation in the giveaway. I am 20 years old, studying electrical engineering and computer science in Greece. In this video, I show you some of my projects I've worked on (bike light, Digital variable voltage regulator, EEPROM programmer, 8-bit computer) I am also working on wireless communication between Arduinos in order to make an external sensor for my Smart Home weather station where I will also use/need a good oscilloscope to analyse the signals and debug my circuits. I hope you liked my lab and be reassured that this oscilloscope will be in good use in my lab.
https://youtu.be/FR5Y8MvmFW4

Are these based of something I am not aware off? It just seems rather unlikely for two to have such a similar layout? (Same yellow bus, similar chip configuration, similar breadboard layout etc...)

I only noticed because I was working on a project in a similar vein, so it spiked my interest.

Hehe, maybe they are both implementing the same design.  ^-^

That's funny, but not the worst. I saw a few videos were the lab looks fake: Some random equipment sitting on a table or shelves, like someone just borrowed stuff from their office or school lab in order to shoot a 2 minutes video. In that kind of videos, there is no evidence of someone actually working or ever worked with those tools.  ;D

Hi all,

I am Thomas, as 23 year old Computer Science student from the Netherlands. My vid is below (sorry was quiet nervous and had to give the camera back to my friend haha).
Anyway, I love working on electronic projects when I am not busy studying. Have been working on a project that is in desperate need of a scope, but it is way too expensive for me.
But I am sure that some people here are in much greater need of such a good scope.

Love your stuff Dave! Bye!

Edit:
And yes: I did clean up a bit before posting this video. This is also where I study so I make sure everything is pretty neat most of the time (and also my bedroom) ;-)

Another one!

I really don't want to come off like I am making down the competition: If there is a design these are based off I really would want to see it!

On a different Note:

137 replies as of now, which would make 137*2 = 274 mins or 4h 34min

However, I count 28 non entries (Vid offline, only text, length more than 2:10) so 218 submissions.

That still leaves 218 min of video: 3h 38min

I am very suprised by the turnout!

Hey Everyone,

Not sure if anyone cares, but if you watched my video you may have seen two texts on my tool box. Not sure how clear they were in the video but I forgot to post the links. I figured I'd just go ahead and post them here in case anyone is interested in picking up a copy! I got them used for fun and they helped me out tremendously, great reads too. The Karp text is a bit dense, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Would it be faire to interpret that second grapoh as saying that there is little point to make a contest longer? People will just submit in the beginning and end anyhow!
Potentially but there's no measure as to the quality of the videos. I think if the window was shorter you'd get a lot more off the cuff videos (Not that there's anything wrong with that, it's what I did lol  ;D).

So, who's the winner?

PICK ME, PICK ME!
I have the best lab and the best reasons to win, but I didn't posted a video!

P.S. My lab is ultra secret, so if I'd show it...

Will you take the text in the post also into account?
2 minutes is really sort to talk about all the usecases, especially like my video.

That's part of the challenge.

I tried to make a video on my project in under 4 minutes some months ago, it just wasn't possible.
So I know it's just impossible for me. Hell I cannot even fit all the stuff into one room, much less one take, so would have to buy video editing software too.

Even though this scope is on my must have list, I'm just too depressed to enter yet another contest I won't win for some daft reason.

Yeah, it's pretty tough if you've got something complex. I'm developing my own hardware and software with ARM processors, DSP, and PHYs, etc... I just had to do a high level overspimlifcation in the hopes I was getting the critical points captured.

You can always try next time!

Do you design this stuff at home?

In my master thesis i musst interface an MII so at least i know whats going on there   :phew:

Yeah! It seems pretty daunting but honestly the biggest barriers for me were initially was trying to use BGA package types and the cost of boards that come along with them. However I found out chips like the AM335, TI Sitara processor that the beagle bone uses,  are actually offered in two packages: ZCZ and ZCE. The ZCE has a reduced IO set and fewer supply pins but the ball grid actually comes in a pattern that can be routed on four layers. I don't know what boards cost in your area but Advanced Circuits actually offers impedance controlled four layer boards for 66 US dollars for 30sq inches. This obciously has some restrictions like via type and no internal routes but still a great deal if you really think about your board and get the majority right the first time. I am very curious if I can have multiple pours for reference planes on one layer for different potentials, does that count as a route???  :-\

Then BGA aren't too bad if you practice a lot on them. My recommendation is to actually buy like 20 voltage translators or something for about 50 cents each and then practice on those, you can etch your own two layer boards dirt cheap to practice on too. Super easy and cheap to build a circuit to test if the connections are good, TI actually makes several fine pitch BGA packages for these parts that are tiny!

Yeah, and sorry the video was so fast, I hope it looked interesting enough to get the win! The DSPs I plan on using actually have MACs and switches built in that I hope to use. Then it can also do all the number MAC (operation) and send that off to the AM3358 that will control all the general operations and motors. I'll let you know how the media converter section works out too, just sent REV1 out to get turned, I got the one with no solder mask and it only cost like twenty bucks or something!

Sorry for the book,

Oh forgot to mention that the soldering I have to borrow a hot air gun for. Those VQFN can be a pain just like BGA. I luckily have some really good techs at TI to help show me the ropes. Lol, wherever you work, always find the good techs and buy them lunch, they WILL save you at some point!

What's your thesis on out of curiosity?

BGAs without soldermask sounds sick  :box:

I cannot tell much. My institute has a cooperation with a company.
But it's about automotive high bandwidth communication and the corresponding Protokolls (ab, ttethernet or tsn) for high quality of service.

This can also be useful for you. It makes Ethernet deterministic ;-)

I've soldered those (Sitara series) and written a programmer for STM32->Sitara hehe.

Any advice for successfully doing such fine pitch or any headaches with the sitara chipsets themselves? I haven't tried a full chip yet, just other smaller inexpensive ones for practice.

Lol, I saw the video notification at 6AM when I woke up and just lept out of bed to see the new video. Had to go to work but at least we have a short tear down to hold us over.  :D

Honestly when I do it I individually place dots of solder paste down with a pin head which takes about 30 minutes then bake it by hand holding it over an electric stove top.

Huh, are the included solder balls on the pad not sufficient? I've used MG Chemicals' flux to hold the chips in place and then go through with a hot air station.

I have no problem paying shipping, and  fee's as it will still save me a great deal of money instead of buying this identical scope! Also check out group gets! We are selling our Wave-One 1GHz IOT boards to anyone who might want to create a low power IOT sensor network. PS: I rented the big brother of this scope for a few months; can't afford the price; and love the touch screen and simple interface. I do find the lack of high end current probs with self calibration (Like Keysight) an issue down the road. At my last job, I often had to use over priced current probes ($10,000-120,000US) to handle the 1200A we pushed at times in our circuits. As of right now I think I'll avoid those high currents... plus uA and nA are the new thing.. companies advertising "Ultra" low power... ;)

When you and David compare notes you should debate putting together an episode about your favorite bits or runners up mentions or just whatever commentary on the vids themselves you'd like. I wish I had the time to go through all of them (though I'd probably regret saying that in retrospect) but if you came up with a suggestion of top 5 folks you think deserve a mention or hit to their Youtube chan from a mention on your channel might be nice.

It'd be fun just don't make too much fun of us ;)

Hey, do we know if he is going to announce the winner publicly by video first? He could just be waiting on a response from someone before posting the winner publicly. I hope it's the former...

Early days yet.  According to YouTube statistics my entry hasn't been watched from Oz yet by either Dave.

Don't rely on youtube statistics to be accurate. I know it's already been said, but the videos we all uploaded are insanely low priority for up-to-date statistics and aggregate counts accurate to single views.
Hm.

Hi All,

I was watching the new eev blog #1010 and he mentioned "the vibe", made me curious about any updates about the project. Anyone hear anything?

I guess Dave and David are still trying to agree who gets it out of the 5 or 6 they shortlisted...

Maybe they should ask R&S for a few more scopes.

Since they are microphonic :-BROKE and being thrown into dumpsters, it should't be too difficult getting more scopes :-DD

Will we ever know the runners up?

They could supply some lower end models for runners up... or those that wouldn't really use all the features of the high end model... I think its a good idea, but I'm biased.

If that was an option, I would have entered.

Having the nominated scope on my bench at the moment, would save me a lot of time with a current project - but I would generally not be using its full capabilities.  A lesser model MSO would suit me and while I was sorely tempted, I did not enter in fairness to Dave and whoever could put it to good use.

That's a fun graph.  I managed to move one bucket to the right during the competition.  I have approximately 4x as many posts as the total of 100 other entrants put together. (And yes I do appreciate post count is not a judging criterion.

According to YouTube stats my video submission has been viewed once from Oz; In two sittings of 59 seconds each! (And I do accept YouTube stats are not sufficiently fine grained to make that definitive).

For reasons that will be obvious from some of my other posts I won't be online much for a while soon.... so GOOD LUCK to all.  8)

Sure but those are still only estimates unless there were javascript hooks to monitor mouse movement, even then I guess some people use the web without moving their mouse around as much as I do so an engine that monitored usage activity based on inputs and the like wouldn't be so accurate for those types.

Basically I think the sort of information google adsense would provide to the domain administrator would be interesting but seeing post counts dwindle is not much of a surprise when a serious giveaway is posted.

This forum is taking track of all that. (on side load bases)
If you don't load a side for 1 hour you are counted as not active.

I think I could write a bot to retrieve that data.
https://www.eevblog.com/forum/profile/?area=statistics;u=141729

But what im doing now is just load one side like:
https://www.eevblog.com/forum/contests/giveaway-rohde-schwarz-rtb2004-oscilloscope/?all

So i would have to load 150 user Profiles .... I think Dave and my Website provider would not like that  :scared:

I got interested ... Here is a graph about new members over the last year.
Actually we don't see anything interesting happening during the 29.6 to 15.7  |O |O |O

So the contest is going down the normal noise of new members ....
Plus the ~100 real new members don't post much in the forum ....

Im sorry to tell but this giveaway head nearly 0 impact on the forum  ... I hope Dave is not going to leren from that conclusion  :scared:

Do you have access to the number of deleted/banned accounts? I wonder how many of them are spambots that are blocked in short order.

Based on the number of threads/posts posted per day, a 100 new members per day seems high to me. I wonder if 90% is bots drowning out the signal from real people.

Only 150 people entered but that doesn't mean that the 32K or so views of the YT video didn't result in people becoming more aware of the forum and viewing as Guest or registering but not entering the competition itself.

I also think it is possible that people created a new forum id specifically for the competition, I wish I had thought of that!  :)

There were a LOT of entries.  Far more than anticipated, I believe.  I can't imagine Dave doing a half-assed job of the judging - so it will take some time.

Remember, he will still have other work that must be done - some of which will not be able to be put off.

The announcement will come.

Its over  :phew: finally I can sleep again  :=\  :-+

Congratulations Matt  :-+ I think you can really use this scope to its fullest ;-)   :box:

Would be nice to see the short list.. just to see who made the list
Yes this would be nice ;-)

I think it was close for me too at least I got stalked alot in the last hours:

Youtube_Views" border="0

Most views I got from Australia sofar ;-)  :-+

I'm also a a little bit (very) disappointed ... Dave you played against your own roles  :--

Will you take the text in the post also into account?
2 minutes is really sort to talk about alle the usecases, especially like my video.

That's part of the challenge.

Got it!

I updated my entry video  8)
https://www.eevblog.com/forum/contests/giveaway-rohde-schwarz-rtb2004-oscilloscope/msg1251074/#msg1251074

I spent 10 hours to make my video ... and then again 2 hours to add more information and speed up parts (what actually made my video harder to watch :palm:)
And now you told that his video was actually not the best and he only won because of his homepage ....
I actually also planning to start a blog ... but my study has 100% priority right now  :(
And as you see in my other videos I also do a lot with FPGAs and mixed signals ... just don't have the time and money to do that more and I'm actually not an electrical engineer |O |O |O |O
And soon also not much more time done to my soon bigger family  8)

I know it was very hard to decide and I respect that. You cannot make it right for everyone :palm:

I will also shutdown the page monitoring soon: (i think eevblog is running good again)
http://rsgiveaway.knoebel.at/

Tanks again. And I'm looking forward to watch more videos soon  :-+

Would be nice to see the short list.. just to see who made the list (or rather to see if I made the list  :-//)

That would be a bad move, it would only lead to endless complaining at best.
I once made the mistake to try and explain to someone who entered the Hack-A-Day contest that I judged why perhaps they maybe didn't win (because they won the "popular vote" based on viewer responses, so they were gobsmacked at not winning), honesty did not go down well.
Will never make that mistake again.

Will never make that mistake again.

only lead to endless complaining at best-   as is human nature ::)

didt win the Ferrari, so its time to save & buy a Holden!

"Someone who doesn't have a scope clearly isn't serious about electronics,"

When I was at Uni I worked in TV repair shops between courses to get some money. For beer, of course. You need beer at Uni.

Most of the places didn't have a scope, and of those that did have one, it was so crappy as to be next to useless. The jobs still got done though. In some cases when you don't have the right tool for the job you have to be creative in the way you use other tools. The guys in those places taught me a few faultfinding tricks that you never get taught in college. Some are still just as applicable today.

OK, so I've just proved that I don't need the RTB2004. Oops.

I am kind of glad that I didn't win because I could not have used the scope to its full capabilities. Also, two days ago, I scored a Tektronix 2230 for $100 on eBay that does everything I needed. Thanks for the opportunity anyways.  ;D

BTW, for those who worried about it not going to a forum contributor, Matt has 200 posts  :-+
(we didn't take that into account though BTW, and I didn't remember Matt's name from the forum)

Looks like a worthy winner Dave.

I also was really impressed by the guy that you said "Had a future in youtube", I wish I had that level of creativity.

I suppose us old guys will have to go back to the luck system in order to try and win.

hey dave,

Super stoaked about the shoutout in your video :)
While it definetly stings to get that close and not win the scope, the positive feedback from you two davids and the rest of the community has been super encouraging.

Also, I think matt can make better use of the incredible analog capabilities, which would I not need for my current project.

Thanks for hosting this giveaway. You gonna do it like this again in the future? On one hand it is a huge time investement, on the other hand it is great to see it go to someone who can actually make good use of it :) Maybe next time, now that you established that you judge similarly, both can judge half the videos and the come together in the end and discuss your two top 10ish picks? Enlist the help of some other community members as guest judges and do the same?

Thanks for inspiring me to get into electronics:)

Philipp

Absolutely, the majority of faultfinding is done with the most basic of tools and experience, in fact having more test gear can make it way more difficult to solve problems, especially if you don't have a good understanding of the basic principles.

That is very true.

Many years ago, I had a quirk in a circuit, so I pulled out the CRO - but it didn't help much.  It was only afterwards when I was just thinking about the problem that an idea came to mind.

I have found that a good understanding not only can help you solve existing problems, but can also make you aware of potential problems that may arise in the future.

Doing more with less is a real thing.

That is very true.

It always helps to have a circuit diagram so you can trace through and understand the operation but of course if you don't have one then you learn reverse engineering quickly too, a very handy skill that's enabled me to earn a decent living.

I sound like a grumpy old man but the 'net and easy access to forums like this as well as datasheets and a huge number of online schematics really has made it a lot easier to avoid having to be able to think for yourself.

Still - I don't think I would have had a chance.

Even if I had - I cannot begrudge the winners.  Very good choices.

Well done R&S  :-+

I learnt a few things which I missed this time around....
  • Wait until near the end before making your submission
  • Mention your blog/website
  • Mention your teaching/outreach
  • Mention your hackerspace/community work
Next time perhaps.

In the meantime it's amazing what you can do with a 2 channel Rigol and some imagination.   :)

Oh shyte! More scopes for the same batch of videos? That's totally unfair, but in a good way.
I was so stupid not to enter the giveaway, now I'm a little bit jealous!

Well done Dave & David & Rohde & Schwartz & winners, glad for you all, well done!

So more than one year is passed. Here my last statistic.

Overall my conclusion is that this kind of contests did not help to grow the community ....
