Now it is at $8,526 and still 25 days to go. I wouldn't support it, the risks are too high: "It might not be that good. It's my first potato salad."  :-DD

that's great !   :-+
but it looks like he'll have a bit hard times with the logistics.... seems that he'll have to buy-out a medium sized farm's production of potatoes  :-DD
but that would be a hell-of-a potato salad party !  :-DD probably he's aiming at a Guinness world record (biggest potato salad party ever !) ;)

Shipping bites of potato salad around the world will be an interesting challenge (although, he did not explicitly promised they will be eatable).

Freeze Dried potato salad? Space potato salad? I think NASA needs to do something about this.

Here in Romania, it's more known as  "salata orientala" ( literal translation oriental salad) and generally is made with egg, olives, onion sometimes, pickle slices, mayonnaise (sometimes), vinegar etc
These look decent:

http://homecookinginmontana.blogspot.ro/2012/01/romanian-oriental-potato-salad-or.html
http://bettykitchen.wordpress.com/2010/12/11/salata-orientala/

There's also some other salad called "salata de boeuf"  (sounds  French but like article says in the following link, it's inspired or copy of Salad Olivier from Russia)... but this one has chicken meat and peas and lots of mayonnaise, looks totally different : http://homecookinginmontana.blogspot.ro/2009/07/romanian-potato-saladsalata-de-boeuf.html
My parents usually made it for Christmas and/or New Year and for some birthdays.. too much mayo to serve it regularly.

My mom has a recipe that everyone seems to like, it is basically an entire meal in a bowl.
There are no official measurements, just mix with what you have available:

Cooked Potatoes (peeled and cut into large chunks)
Boiled Eggs (Sliced)
Cooked bacon (Cut into fairly large pieces)
Chopped Onion (Uncooked)
Chopped Bell Pepper (Uncooked)
Chopped Celery (Uncooked)
Sweet Pickle Relish
Mayonnaise
Dijon Mustard
Salt
Pepper
Paprika (garnish on top)

I suppose it's very similar to deviled eggs but with the extras added in.

My makes great potato salad. The secret is in the ingredients, instead of potatoes she uses sliced tomatoes and cucumbers.

In Spain, they call it "Ensaladilla Rusa" (Little Russian Salad) but I prefer a good German Potato Salad with whole mustard seeds.

bingo, this is what we call salad in Poland. Potatoes is something you serve with meat as a main course, salad is some veggies on a side.

Then again, food is something I absorb to delay death.

Yes, but not store bought mayonnaise, you need to make it fresh.

I don't think I've ever known anyone to make mayo from scratch personally.  I've seen it done on cooking shows though.

You just need one of this:

and the container that fits and comes with it (kind of like a tall glass)

+ one Egg (not too cold so let it warm up if you just took it from the fridge).
+ Oil part olive oil with some vegetable oil myself I like canola oil (just olive oil is just too strong).
+ Salt to taste.

That's it.
you can add some fresh garlic for more umph.
Chiplote or other hot peppers or other ingredients for flavor optional as well.

Start from the bottom and let it coagulate. while mixing it, forgot the percentage of oil right now but easy to find online.

Easy and cheap and way better than anything that you can find on the store. But it doesn't keep for a long time, one week tops refrigerated then throw it away, but we usually make enough for what we need so we don't have to worry about keeping it.

It's really easy, make sure the bowl is clean.
If the mixture doesn't emulsify initially, dont throw it out.
Start again with one egg yolk, and add a tiny bit of the first mixture to it, mix till it is emulsified then keep adding more and mixing.
Takes 5-10 minutes.

I normally just use a fork.
