patreon crowdfunding - saving lives and the environment
« on: January 07, 2016, 02:14:36 pm »
Hi all:
I am located in the Caribbean....no Kickstarter for us ( :--) and Indiegogo isn't the greatest 'tech' launch pad. So I have to try an alternative. So I am looking for constructive comments about the following approach.

I have developed a product which regenerates lead acid batteries (mostly automotive tgt market) within a day or so using purely electronic means. It uses a 12 phase system of which desulfation is but one as these batteries have multiple failure modes which must be analyzed and corrected automatically.

I have statistically tested it (about 200 failed auto. batteries processed) and the yields are > 30% go back to original OEM service. The remainder are rated for the re-smelt. The service lifetime of these regenerated batteries average between 9 to 15 months. The process includes rerating the batteries Ah and CCA.  :)

In the Caribbean and across the tropical belt in the developing world, lead acid battery failures are much more than colder climates. In fact 50% more for every 8.4°C ambient avg temp rise. Thus a 1°C rise due to global warming increases early battery failure by 6%. So it's getting worse!

Now these batteries are often 'broken' and smelted in backyard operations in the developing world, it's a long term 'fallout' that severely deteriorates health and the environment. :--

It happened via a different means in the U.S. , similar problem though that STILL exists:

The product/project has been awarded by an E.U. organization as one of 6 Caribbean projects that should be commercialized.

So my approach to getting investment to run a pilot project 'regenerating' these batteries and then getting systems 'sponsored' for the scavengers who are forced to 'break' batteries for a living is via patreon.com. In effect, creating a nontoxic form of sustainable living from a (self replenishing) toxic waste for unskilled people.

Now Patreon is normally used for 'content' from creators with continuous contributions on a per content item basis. My 'content' will be as follows:

A short video of a sequentially numbered (3 digits) battery ( hot carved #) showing it being tested before and after regeneration with a 'carbon pile' type tester. Only videos of 'regenerated' batteries will be posted. Patrons can 'contribute'  for each video posted ($1 to $20 ) with a monthly max. contribution being set. Only defunct batteries with 'rest' voltages < 11V will be eligible for regeneration processing.
I have a set of 'rewards' for each category of support, but the rewards are mostly based around special mention or free advertising in the product manual or on the product labeling. The product is a 9" cube containing about 90 sq inches of SMT circuitry to do the job.

By the way, in the Caribbean alone, Trinidad, Jamaica and Santo Domingo have been cited for lead toxicity problems by Pureearth.org.

So this  'crowdfunding' is quite different, and my question is: what would it take for YOU to become a patron, what would YOU want to see or EXPECT? You don't receive anything except honourable mention but your help WILL save children and the environment (flora & fauna) from a slow, toxic, death. The Caribbean is slowly poisoning itself and becoming a dumping ground for used automobiles, it's not all white sands, tropical birds, eco tourism and suntanning anymore, we have to mitigate or we destroy some of the most beautiful places on earth.

Thanks for any advice.
