I think it shouldn't be hard for anybody, honestly. Shouldn't be any harder than burning a CD, for example.

The people you're thinking about would fall in my "knows how to use IE, MS Office and some Google" category.

When I think of "not good with computers", I think of my grandparents. I must have shown them at least half a dozen times how to burn a CD. (Lord knows why they think they even need to burn CDs, they can barely figure out how to access them once they've done it.) My grandmother still doesn't understand that files aren't saved "inside" the program that's saving them. They're obviously not the target audience of whatever the hell an Ouya is, but still, that's always where my mind goes when I hear that phrase

It always amazes me how easy it is to make great computing products, and how almost no companies are competent at doing it.

I have an iPad.  I also had a Surface.  I can easily tell the pros and cons of each.  The iPad lacks an SD card slot, and a USB plug.  If it had those, it would be almost perfect.  Microsoft comes along and adds those things, but comes up with a hacked together OS called RT, then they put in a processor that is just a bit too slow and makes the user experience just not up to the Apple standard.

Then they fix all those problems in a device called the "Pro" version, but that is double the price of the iPad.


The same with cell phones.  Until I got my Galaxy S4, every single phone could be held and used for a day or two and you would immediately find several things that kept it from being great.

Do the hardware companies not see this?

Same with Ouya.  Sub-par controller, a bit too slow on the hardware and just not quite there with the software.  Do they not use their own hardware and see where they have fallen short?

The problem is that the technically proficient simply refuse to accept what "not good at" means, when it comes to computers. If your date tells you that she's not good at riding a bike, you don't press her to take a romantic ride, because there's a fair chance it will end in blood or a trip to the ED. If your friend tells you he's not good at driving a car, you wouldn't dream of lending him yours.

But if they say they aren't good at computers, your give them a few minutes instruction and leave the room in frustration with instructions to yell/call if they need help -- when the very reason we're leaving is the mind-boggling amount of help they obviously need this very minute.

If computers really exploded on "Does Not Compute", they'd blow up in our faces, not theirs.

Believe me, somebody always sees it, and says, "We're not done, it needs X and Y and Z." and what passes for management says, "No, we have to ship it because we're blowing the budget and the tooling is already done, and the product development cycle will be too long, and ... so stop developing the product and ship it.  Now."
