24V LED strip from ebay/china
« on: November 18, 2018, 03:36:50 am »
So I just got some 24V LED strips I ordered from ebay and much to my disappointment they came exactly as pictured :(

If anyone hasn't see these, it's just a stip of LEDs (RGB in my case) that you can cut every 3rd LED for a 12V strip. So that's 3 LEDs in series with a small drop resistor

Anyway, so I thought I would go 24V to run 1/2 the current and use smaller wires to run to them. But it seems that whomever designed this either didn't understand ohms law, because the 24V strip, rather than having 6 LEDs in series with the same drop resistor, has 3 LEDs in series still, with I assume a bigger drop resistor :(  Meaning I get the run the exact same current, but at 24V now.  :palm:

I just used 2 12V strips in series, so got the current down to half, and this was only because I was going cheap, using an old 24V power supply that was lying around unused, and also recycling old LED strips I gutted out from the scrap yard from scrapped display fridges. Did not need anything more.

I would just run 2 in series, the light output will be lower, but the led's will be more efficient at lower current, so not half the brightness, probably 40% less, and as a bonus they will last a lot longer and run cooler.
