There's an old saying: "There's no such thing as bad publicity."

If Dave were to take this on, the result would inevitably require some degree of technical competence to fully appreciate the process and the outcomes.  This immediately eliminates a significant proportion of a population - as those people would not be able to make an informed decision from their own assessment.  This is where the facts and objectivity go out the window.

The charlatan simply labels those who agreed it's a fraud as ignorant dinosaurs and continues to spin their tale to the rest of the population that doesn't know any better.

The bottom line is that the proof of fraud effectively gets dismissed and the fraudster has received a grand amount of publicity - which they will add to their armoury of propaganda.  They will then present the interaction as a victory and they will be successful because the people who are left will not have been able to understand the results - they will just believe whatever spin is put on it.

Edit:
For Dave, it's just as it was in the movie War Games - The only winning move is not to play.

Didn't work out to well in the end for uBeam, Fontus, and the like now did it? Bad publicity only goes so far unless you want infamy. This one is also super easy to test and debunk, you don't need to know rocket science to demonstrate that a dead battery stays dead, no multimeter needed, just a load. You could even do it on live TV with an audience to ask questions.

How did it end badly for Fontus, uBeam, etc.? The money got spent. The employees don't need to return their salaries and bonuses. I may be mistaken, but I don't think that anybody went to jail over it.

Fontus went bankrupt, uBeam is on the way out, and Theranos did get busted. Don't know if stuff like Batterizer, Waterseer and the other crap companies are still about, but the point is scams don't last, they can be stopped. Of course a lot of the money can't be recovered, but the sooner they are stopped the better.

... but the sooner they are stopped the better.

I agree wholeheartedly, but the unfortunate reality is that there will be "believers" who will hang in there until the bitter end.  This isn't because of some potential in the product, but from the art of the con-man.  It is this art, combined with the minds of those who want to believe that hobbles the effectiveness of any evidence to the contrary.

The fact that there have been abject failures in the past by "the establishment" declaring a certain technology or capability as impossible, doesn't help.  For scammers, this is a trump card that was handed to them - and they can (and do) play it whenever they want.

We need to approach these things in terms of "how to identify fraud". The signs, tachtics and methods of fraud and how to watch out for it. Basically, educate the public on how fraud works in general, not just in science. Beat them at their own game. Scam the scammers. There will always be nuts, but the public needs to learn to throw them under the street cleaners just like the flat-earthers.

Someone posted this in Twitter:

That is starting to sound a lot like pseudo-legal speak which is common among the Sovereign Citizen Movement (AKA: complete nut-jobs).

It would be a good idea to begin snapshotting the website, because I'd expect their statements will be dynamically adapted as their idea will meet the reality.

Dave did a video on that very topic.

Not just bogus products, but everything from phone scams to fake crap to ponzi schemes. People need to wise up and be at least a bit more sceptical.

I was out getting lunch today in Ultimo (inner city Sydney, just a block from UTS) and there was a laminated ad for it stapled to a power pole.

Sadly my phone decided it didn't want to have a working camera at that time or I'd share a photo.

If I was going anywhere near the city, I'd make the detour.  Unfortunately, I have nothing planned.

Can you provide an exact location in case someone is in the area?

A satellite image with "X" marks the spot would be brilliant.

I actually saw a second while out getting dinner last night too, the two locations are:

Wattle St, on the east side of the intersection with Kelly St
Bay St, on the west side, roughly near the intersection with Greek St

Today has been a bit too wet & horrible to go wandering.

The weather cleared up, and I was feeling like a walk, so I went and grabbed a photo.

The QR code is simply the website URL.

That's what happens when you staple through the laminate ... and it rains.   ::)

Considering they went to all the trouble of laminating the thing, it would have been nice if they had printed it in colour.
