Advanced board outline in Eagle?
« on: January 10, 2016, 06:05:50 am »
Hey all,
I have made a few boards in eagle now but never to specific dimensions, I recently selected an enclosure I would like to build a project in. The datasheet for the enclosure supplies a maximum pcb size. I was hoping someone would be able to give me some tips or point me to a page/video where I could learn about creating more complex board outlines so that I can re-create this design in Eagle.

Here is a link to the data sheet: http://www.hammondmfg.com/pdf/1553B_BAT.pdf

   Thanks,
   -Trevor

You use zero width wires on the Dimension layer to specify the outline. You can use the Miter tool to make the curves.

Generally speaking, you'd rough out the outline using straight lines of the correct lengths as specified by the datasheet. Then you'd use the miter tool to add the correct radius to each line.

You can also stick the outline in a custom component to make it easier to re-use. In that case you'd delete the default outline when you make the new board, then add the custom component instead.

And don't forget to print it out and check the actual physical fit before you spend a bunch of time laying out the board :)

+1.

I recently made one for the 1553BGY (without the battery).

You can also draw the outline in CAD, export the DXF and import it into Eagle.

According to Elecrow you can simply take a bmp and use the import-bmp.ulp to create the "outline" onto layer 46. It will be completely filled - not just an outline but it seems like they accept that as well... I wouldn't dare trying that with another fab though...

Set the grid to 10mm with 1mm alt and start drawing straight lines on the dimension layer.
Make sure they are a fully connected.

That is all.

Download DXF from hammond, remove all the dims and other crap

Import into eagle on Dim layer

Make and drink a cup of tea in extra the time it would have taken to draw it out by hand  :P!
