The very first thing in the release notes:
Quote
CadSoft now provides an EAGLE "Make Pro" edition with capabilities similar to
Standard edition. In particular the board area is limited to 160x100mm, but
board width and height can be adjusted. The license is limited to one year
and an internet connection is required.
There is also a new edition "Make Personal" available which was previously
called "EAGLE Hobbyist".

So they now seem to allow 160cm² instead of a fixed 160x100mm which is great. I didn't quite read up on the differences between the various types of licenses and pricing models but personally I will NOT ever pay for a piece of software which I'm not allowed to use from the day I bought it and for as long as I want.

"an internet connection is required." Pray tell, why?

It looks to me like it's all pretty much the same as it was. There's a new name for the hobbyist version and they've added the "Make Pro" version which seems to be like Standard, but with an annual license and only 4 layers instead of 6. See http://www.cadsoftusa.com/eagle-pricing/ and http://www.cadsoftusa.com/product-overview/. The pricing for the hobbyist version seems to be the same as it was.

Maybe there's more to it that I'm not seeing?

To remind/force you to renew your license each year is my guess.
They took a lot of heat from their users when they changed their license model the other year. So much so that they reverted to their old license model. Now they are sort of into it again but only on this new Make Pro version - as far as I can see.

They can forget that yearly subscription junk, I'd never go for that.

Their make offerings are 20% off until the end of this month though.

The make personal might be good.  For $135.20 you get:

non commercial
layout/schematic/autorouter
1 user
99 sheets
6 layers
160x100mm

it says the license is perpetual and that needs to be online=NO.

Is this the same as the hobbiest one was?

The "problem" with Make Personal is, as far as I can see, that it's back to a fixed 160x100, you can't do 170x20 (or whatever) which you can with Make Pro. But yeah, for $135 it's reasonable. I'm not expecting "everything for free" and I could probably justify paying twice or three times that for the Make Pro if it wasn't for the bloody subscription thing.

When you can buy the standard version for $575 outright, why spend $299 a year on the make pro?  Use it more than one year and you've lost money and forever will, right?

Yeah, except that EAGLE Business Standard, once again is limited to the fixed 160x100, can't do 170x20 as far as I can see. You have to spring for the Business Professional edition which is twice the price of Standard....

On the other hand Eagle Learn Professional is the same price as Business standard but without the board size limits. You probably can't buy that as an individual though and it's non commercial of course.

Oh well....

Thanks, anything new that's worthwhile?

Sometime between 7.2.0 & 7.4.0 they removed the "drop" library button from the schematic-add part window?

Somehow I've gotten myself stuck with a local library that no longer exists anywhere except in the schematic parts list - the folder/file on disk has been deleted, and it doesn't appear in the Control Panel or Library Manager - and I can't figure out how to drop it...

(The pricing structure is seriously whack, the on-line requirement for the subscription versions is a big turn-off - seems they're still trying hard to push that barrow despite the rousing reception last time - and when I try to find the price for the "Make Personal" edition it tells me it's "n/a" (or maybe that's just because it recognises I'm in Aus?))

anything that 'requires internet' is a walking security red-flag, to me.

Fuck Eagle, they are following the Altium cloudware. And their improvements over versions don't seem good enough to me after 7.2, anyway.

They changed the license system because complaints, now they are making the licensing shit even worse. They are self-boycotting and giving advantage to low-mid range price EDA software.

One more reason to switch to KiCad! Thanks, CadSoft! You are contributing indirectly to the FOSS EDA ecosystem ;)
