Regardless of either, their autorouter sucks anyway. Best off doing a hand route or using the DSN router if you must.
I have a paid license for Eagle and hardly ever use the autorouter.
Voltage does not flow, nor does voltage go.

I have the Pro license for the schematic and layout editor... but my Eagle is still at v5.11

I'm now investigating switching to KiCad, learning it right now, but KiCad seems half-baked.

What DSN router?

The Freeroute used to be a web based java app but is not supported at last look.
I enclose the ulp to save the board (unrouted!) and either run the jnlp or use the compiled version in exe.
As always, scan the files for goodness and no badness.
Lookup freeroute on Google for more confusion in working versions. Check with Cadsoft support for it's history.
EDIT: I cannot upload the exe file due to restrictions here. It is 3MB in size. You could however compile it yourself.
Any ? let me know.

Sorry Chris, I have to agree that Kicad is still lacking and hard to get a grip on. :-// Too many forks. Perhaps with your promotions and tinkering with it it will be a stellar product.

You're confusing KiCad with gEDA. Despite it's flaws, they're aware of them and trying it hard with their very limited resources.

They need more developers and financing. Improve the renderer, better integration and refactoring, sane and well thought UX, massive file format interoperability, STEP support and used by default for 3D nodels, robust and extensive library, more advanced Gerber viewer, version control and collaborative Edition, visual diffs..

But they aren't infinite developers, that takes time and there's people working very hard in the code in their free time it allowed to partially with some job hours on it (CERN). A robust community must be done for this to happen, at least.

You can donate money or send patches. If I had the money, I would donate 500-1000 to KiCad rather than buy Eagle, specially after their shitty always online DRM shit. What the fuck were they thinking about? I often used Eagle offline, this is a pain in the butt!

There's lots of promising projects, but lacks lots of developers: QUCS, Sigrok and many others I don't remember right now.

This autorouter looks interesting too: https://github.com/vygr/C-PCB

Don't get your knickers in a bunch, the yearly fee is only for the "Make" versions, the regular versions without any time limitations are still available as before.

Code: [Select]

1 User

Or for an upgrade of the "Hobbyist/Student" version:
Code: [Select]
Serial number 8B247Cxxxx-Lxx-WLM-9SS V7.0
License period: Unlimited
Net price: USD 0.00

Firstly, I have no inclination to use a GitHub release that is uncompiled without a webpage explaining the virtues of the product, its usage, nice pictures (a picture is worth a thousand words) and some basic examples. I dislike Git Hub with is branches and forks with everybody and his brother contributing with no solid release. I dislike  command line statements, special cases capitol I means this and lowercase i means that. No thanks. AVR Dude for example.
But we're off on a tangent here. I am answering fivefish's question about the autorouter, as well as helping someone from buying into a bad autorouter when a free one is available.

The autorouter I mentioned was specifically posted on the Cadsoft forums as to its usage with a webpage of how to use it. It came with a ULP to integrate it into Eagle. I got it working in 10 minutes and was for all the world miles ahead of the built in autorouter. My time is valuable and I don't need to spend hours working at how to use something for which I have no clue about. The Free Router still works in the raw jnlp and exe formats to this day.
