I don't want to modify the library part if possible - is there another way?

I don't think so!
I tried the same thing in the past, and the solution was to create a new component without that layer, based on the old component.
In this way a keep both versions

Assembly Variants is what you are looking for.

Edit -> Assembly Variants in the schematic window
