More control over path styles
« on: December 15, 2018, 12:50:52 pm »
I've recently got into RF circuit design and I've wanted to try out some various layouts using microstrips and coplanar waveguides. Specifically, I'd like to be able to mitre corners of traces and terminate them in a 'square' end as opposed to the default rounded one. Is this at all possible? The only thing I've been able to think of doing is using the free form polygon tool to create a signal in the shape I want and using that, although it would take longer to route this way and is harder to control the dimensions.

As a side note I am not using the latest version of Eagle (8.6), mostly because I was fed up with the constant barrage of updates forcing me to manually install all my libraries each time. If the newer versions offer any tools which might help, I suppose I could upgrade.

I'm not an RF engineer, I have dabbled a little but nothing too serious, I think using polygons is probably the easiest way to achieve the shapes you need. You are right, you can't change the end caps and although you can miter traces you can't do it in the way I think you are needing for this type of application.

As a side note I am not using the latest version of Eagle (8.6), mostly because I was fed up with the constant barrage of updates forcing me to manually install all my libraries each time. If the newer versions offer any tools which might help, I suppose I could upgrade.

I would use the latest v9.2.2 if I were looking at this as the move tool has been enhanced a lot in v9 and now will preserve angles when moving, including with polygons which will help a lot if you are trying to create specific shape polygons for an RF design. Combine this with good use the main and alt grids and you should be able to create most shapes quickly and easily.

With regards to your issue with manually installing libraries. You don't need to do this. Have your own libraries in your own custom location and specify this in the directories setup, then every new version installed will see these libraries and there is no need to reinstall.

Best Regards,

Rachael
I have a weakness for Test Equipment so can often be found having a TEA break (https://www.eevblog.com/forum/chat/test-equipment-anonymous-(tea)-group-therapy-thread/)
