Gold plating through holes and vias.
« on: November 06, 2018, 10:23:34 am »
I have a question and I can't seem to find an answer.

When the PCB is gold plated is the inside of the hole plated to. By looking at the pictures of some boards I can see that there seems to be gold, but I don't know if that is general rule or it should be payed extra to manufacturer.

The gold coating covers all the exposed areas, so if the via holes are not covered with solder mask they will also get gold plating. However, the thickness might not be the same inside the via holas as on the solder pads.

If the hole is big enough to get wet, it will be plated.  The metal is carried as atoms through an electrical field in a solvent.  The holes are plated through before the board is etched into circuit patterns.
