Placement of 90-degree pinheaders
« on: June 22, 2017, 09:51:14 am »
I usually place the headers as J1 but is now wondering if it would be a reasonably good idea to place a 90-degree pinheader a bit in from the pcb edge (J2) in order to have some extra stability from the shroud of the female pinheader.   The PCB would probably be less prone of flapping back and forth which is good, but on the other hand any force on the pcb would be transferred to the female connector and possibly damage its connections.  (This is for a "motherboard/daughtercards"-like application. )

I'm aware that pinheaders are not really a good choice for this kind of usage - but for low cost hobby usage I'm willing to forgo the quality a bit.

I would put the female version of the header in the motherboard (they could be powered) at board edge level.
In the daughterboards, I would put the male header as per your J1.

Always:
If it contains powered pins - it is a female\socket connector.

re your pics, it depends what is going to plug into it, consider the ease of insertion\removal, clearances, have you got the free space, does it all fit?

In my house, the "powered" pins (those receiving power) are all male.   Powering (those providing power)  are female.   That is for safety.

Is that what you mean?

Yes, pins with power on them should be female.
As you know, this prevents them being shorted out when the mating connector is not inserted.
