Trouble with Hammond 1551USB1 enclosure
« on: February 13, 2019, 06:50:14 am »
I’m trying to design a board for the 1551USB1 (http://www.hammondmfg.com/pdf2/1551USB1.pdf), but can’t seem to figure out how to place the USB-A connector.

Most of those connectors specify just about the same footprint and it looks like this (attached) when naively placed. It looks wrong for more reasons than one, but I’m most worried about the clearance around the screw hole.

Am I using the wrong connector? Is there something else I’m missing?

Thanks a lot!

I've drawn this box with a Moles 48037-1000 USB connector. That fits fine.
Maybe you've drawn the connector wrong?

That looks like a different enclosure, though.

I used the step file from the 1551USB2.

Maybe they are expecting you to use castellated holes for the USB mounting tabs.
And bring the socket out a bit further so it clears the screw hole.

The OP stated 1551USB1 though.  It's step file looks like...

What is the part number of the USB connector you want to use?  Through hole or SMD?  Plug or jack?

I was using the footprint from here:

No preference between THT and SMD, This is a hobby project, it will be only a few units and hand soldered.

It looks like your connector will just fit with the edge of the pin at the edge of the standoff.
With suggested max PCB size from the Hammond datasheet.

The funny thing is it's probably cheaper to buy USB thumb drives on aliexpress and throw away the PCB than it is to buy hammond USB enclosures.

Yeah, I did think of that, but a lot of those don’t look like they can be opened non-destructively, or seem to require special connectors, so I figured I’d save myself the time and money experimenting with them.

These hammonds are not that expensive, either, and they should be straighforward to use — or so I thought (:

Thanks guys, lots of good answers. In the meantime Hammond came back to me, too. They suggested extending the pcb by 0.5-2mm.

I’ll try these suggestions when I get the time and report back.
