6v USB Charger Adapter? B#LLSH#T!
« on: March 13, 2015, 10:14:54 pm »
I think that the following might make a good topic if it hasn't been covered.

There are a number of USB power adapters advertised in China that say in the title that they output 6v through the USB socket which surely couldn't be true.  If it were true, wouldn't that damage a lot of sensitive devices since the USB voltage is only 5V?

See: http://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Portable-mobile-6v-usb-charger-adapter_60187705908.html?s=p

The funny thing with this particular one is that if you look at the label on the adapter in the picture it clearly states 5V output, and the specs show a different story with a variable output of 5-36V!

There is also this one that supposedly outputs 5v, 6v, 9v and 24v out of the USB sockets.
See: http://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/5v-6v-9v-12v-24v-usb_662640603.html?s=p

This is a really good marker for scam companies that you should never do business with.

I don't have as much trouble with that as I do with all three versions having the same model number.

Looks to me more like a list, they'll make you adaptors for whatever voltage you need,  with 5v usb being an option. If you scroll down both show non-usb versions.

The real problems are safety, does not meet the specs printed on it, fake certification marks, and counterfeits.

I have a few "5V 1A" counterfeit usb phone chargers somewhere that output 5.4V and drop to 3V at 300mA.
Anyone can buy them for a few cents each and sell them at 1000% markup and they do.

All the adapters in the list only show USB sockets.

At the bottom of the page I did noticed that they sell a cable that has a USB plug at one end and a socket at the other end that accepts different plugs.

So maybe if you plug a USB device directly into the socket you get 5V, but if you use their special adapter cable, you get different voltages depending on which plug you use on the end.

In that case, that's a very clever idea!

I particularly like "setup","hold" and "rise" times... They're forgetting fall times; if they had that they'd be describing the perfect synchronous digital interface!  :-DD

More like, you plug in a USB cable to it for 12V and fry your phone because you forget it's a 12V adapter.

6V Chinese USB chargers unfortunately are true. A lot of them are so crap that don't not use optocoupler for output voltage feedback, therefore awful load regulation. So without a load output voltage usually is around 6V. But frankly this is the least of the issues with them. Major concern is safety.
