eevBLAB #4 - Youtube Multi-Channel Networks SUCK!
« on: January 01, 2015, 09:05:55 am »
Dave doesn't particularly like Youtube Multi-Channel Networks like Fullscreen, Machinima, and Makers Studios, and wishes they would just leave him alone.
Should you join one? What are the benefits?

Wouldn't there be a benefit of getting people exposed to your channel by them finding out while viewing another channel with similar potential viewers?

Of course, honestly it would just make more sense to become friends with other youtubers who are in the same niche and work to promote each other, like for instance you and martin or something.

I started getting into lots of good content on youtube about a year or two ago. Before that, EEVblog was really the only thing I subscribed to.

After having watched a lot of youtube, I have seen a ton of different ways of monetizing channels and cross promoting channels.
Some of the monetizing stuff is subscription based, like patreon (or subbable), and often, Audible.com sponsors channels.

I've also seen a ton of collaborations. There are interchannel collaborations, and company / channel collaborations.

For example, General Electric did a collaboration with The Slow Mo Guys. The slow mo guys went to some of GE's facilities, and filmed some tech GE was working on in slow motion. One of the things was a superhyrdophobic (water repelling) coating, and how the water pooled and cleared off in slow mo. The content fit the channel (cool stuff in slow mo), and also promoted GE. Another couple examples are colinfurze and both HTC and some videogame (assassin's creed maybe?). HTC sent him a bunch of phones and asked him to do something unique with them. He tested the phones for durability, and sent them to the edge of space in a weather balloon and tried to shoot off a firework up there. For the videogame, he hot-rodded a tuk-tuk, and added bb guns, to resemble a weaponized tuk-tuk in the game. All of the content fit the channels they were on, but also happened to be promoting a product or company. It was definitely product placement, but I'd classify it as a new era of product placement, where it's not obtrusive and irrelevant.

I've also seen a few channel collaborations. Sometimes one channel I watch will collaborate with another one I watch (that's always fun). Sometimes they will collaborate with another channel that I don't watch. If it's something I'm interested in, I will probably go check out the channel. Often, there are two part videos, with one part being on each channel. I can't think of a lot of examples of this, but one is MKBHD (a tech reviewer) recently did a top electronics of 2014 video of something, and collaborated with another channel for a section on phone cases (MKBHD doesn't use cases, so this collaboration fit very well: solid reviews of a couple phone cases from someone who uses them a lot, but still relevant to MKBHD's viewers).
I've also seen collaborations that didn't make a whole lot of sense. Imagine EEVblog collaborating with a makeup channel, maybe by doing a teardown of some laser hair removal product. Not really too out of place for the EEVblog, but that collaboration would be a little strange.

Also remember that even you have done at least on collaboration: That apollo LVDC board from Fran. Think you got any new subscribers that were referred from her channel? You've also mentioned mike's electric stuff channel a couple times as well.z

I have no idea if CMS are behind all of these collaborations, but I'm sure they're behind some of them. Not sure if they're worth it at all, but collaborations with other youtubers definitely happen, and do expand their user bases.

i had one contact me years ago in relation to one video and how they believed it had potential to become viral - before they contacted me that particular video was doing fairly well, may be coincidence that since that contact was made its not had any views in the last 8 months lol

they wanted to place the video on their own channel and pay me a percentage for views, i cant remember exactly but i remember thinking, 1 i dont really care 2 i dont really care 3 stop wasting my time, ive not heard from any since but a lot has happened and ive not had a chance to post any videos for a while.

one of their tricks to increase your video views is to set up playlists say for example of music videos and youve made your own music video or parody, any one who clicks to view that play list with all these popular songs will stumble upon your video hidden in there as well.
any way, happy new year guys

I don't know what it's like for people outside the UK but, even though I'm supposedly ex-directory, and after subscribing to my supplier's opt-out site I still get a number of phone calls nearly every day trying to get me to sign up to something or other.

I guess this is just another downside to the age of communication.

remember kindergarten/school bullies shaking smaller kids/geeks/suckers out of lunch money? Well, they grew up and became bros running YT content networks :)

machinima forgot to pay mans1ay3r for few months ...

then there is this http://www.broteampill.com/forums/index.php?topic=4522.0
and machinima people reaction, one of them says 'we should screw him over even more' on LIVE stream :D
and legal threats to take down that stream cap https://twitter.com/BroTeamPill/status/500110266332610560
shit is hilarious

no clue what broteam is, but Inside Gaming is a bunch of guys that grew IG channel from grounds up, ~800 subs a day, at 600K now. What is crazy they grew this channel while its FULLY owned by machinima (brand content rights, everything), and they work for salary, no revenue sharing! :0  :palm: Adam Kovic owns 1% of machinima, so maybe he is secretly effing rest of the crew in the ass or something  :-//

ps: I read somewhere pewpew is leaving makers studio in 2015, apparently makers studio wasnt too happy reading about it in some interview and drama ensued  :-DD

The science youtubers do this really well. e.g. Vertasium, Vsauce, Smater Every Day.
They all hang out a lot, go on road trips together, and do really well thought out collaborations.

Yes, we all tend to promote each other as it's small community.
It's only beneficial for all of us. None of us are "competitors".

Channel networks also have advantages from a protection point of view - it's a lot harder to get booted off YouTube if you're part of a network, you also get the added legal protection of having company lawyers backing you, you're no longer just an individual making videos.

That's really more relevant to gaming and review channels though; using the DMCA as a way to stifle negative press is a popular tactic by games publishers.  That's a lot harder to do if you're part of Polaris, for example: they're part of Maker Studios, which is owned by Disney - ultimately you're probably going to find yourself butting heads with Disney's lawyers.
I write software.  I'd far rather be doing something else.

To add to your collection, here is the story of Ross Scott (of Accursed Farms), who makes excellent comedy using game engines.
It took him about a year and a lawyer to escape from Machinima, after they tried to sneak in a new contract that would basically strip him of the rights to his own videos, and things like that.

The beginning: http://www.accursedfarms.com/escape-from-machinima/
And the conclusion (AFAIK): http://www.accursedfarms.com/escape-from-machinima-part-2/

Also, I forgot to mention that the MCN's are actually hiring established bloggers as staffers in order to recruit people, because it's supposed to have some legitimacy if it comes from "one of your own".
I was approached by Peter Chao from the VISO Network who runs the youtube channel
http://www.youtube.com/user/pyrobooby
So 860K subs and 200M+ views, he's an established star.
They have recruited him full time to try and bring in other bloggers, and he was pretty darn pushy and continued to insist time and time again that I was wrong and that he knew how to grow my channel and take it to wider audience, if only I'd join their wonderful network ::)

Are all of those people that naive? stupid? suckers? Every single machinima testimonial includes numerous examples of machinima breaking contract obligations, and yet they all cry about not being able to leave.

guy complains, but at the end states he cant leave (probably 5 year contract lol).

HIRE a bloody lawyer why dont you :/

So 860K subs and 200M+ views, he's an established star.

judging by thumbnails/video titles he is also a douche and a bro, perfect match

I used to like some shows on Revision3 but i couldn't download older shows anymore since they were bought by Discovery Networks. Even though Revision 3 was a network by itself, they had nothing to do with me liking some of their shows.
That aside, take Elric from Motherboards.org and the way he was treated. He had to leave his channel behind and had to start over with Tech of Tomorrow.
https://www.google.com/search?q=elric+motherboards.org

And the story is the same for all channels i'm subscribed to: related videos and user comments lead me to other interesting bloggers etc.
Afrotechmods mentioned EEVblog, YT search lead me to MikesElectricStuff,...
I supported/am supporting content creators via Flattr, Patreon, PayPal donations,... I'll keep on doing that for as long as i have money in the bank and an interest in the content/people behind the YT channel.

Sad, but unfortunately that almost always happens when you sign over rights to something you built and created, or take your company public, take venture capital etc. A lesson learned the hard way.
Seems like he has recovered well with almost 400K subs?

The thing is Simon that it is often rammed down our throats that this is how the super rich get richer.
Our own government is now specialist at profiting from de-constructing the country.
Art is gone to unmade beds, sport to rapist footballers and drugged cyclists, music to algorithms(algorythms?).
Even education has been de-constructed, Jesus so many kids leave school illiterate, in the 21st century UK.

New age c*nts that never realised Alan Bastard was satirical.

Argg sorry for the rant :(

Yago  your not wrong ,education, has so far cost me £4000.00 in tutors teaching my children in the evenings because the teachers are so busy teaching the Eastern European children, how to speak ,read, and write English, and spending less time teaching our children.we are deconstructed

Clearly they need to be teaching someone how to write English...

First off, I am sorry to EEVers, my rant was out of place and sadly typical of the cloud I have been under for several months now :(
Sorry, I will try harder to not be such a miserable moaning ****!

Now, my rant was certainly NOTHING to do with race.
In fact if anyone wanted to try to point the finger at a race within my rant, they would be distinctly British, white and upper class.

Simon was not wrong in what he said either, there are at least two lost generations, that many of, don't know how to work to even feed themselves. With priorities to match.

No Fact, then after they have been educated, they wash cars,or become experts in screwing the benefit system, Ukip thats shows you know nothing.

You sure are one to talk about education, seeing how you can barely string together an intelligible sentence.

I'd love you to provide some evidence of that, rather than just hyperbole.

The evidence is that immigrants to the UK from the EU are of net benefit to the UK economy, but don't let facts get in the way of a good rant.

And as for "become experts in screwing the benefit system", I am sure you will find that there are plenty of UK nationals who are just as good or better at that.

You clearly don't live in East Anglia with that comment, and I would say that the UK nationals have at least have paid something towards it at sometime
Not if they have gone straight from education to benefits.

Did you know that EU migrants arriving this century (i.e since 2000) are about half as likely to be on benefits as the UK average?

Edit: Hmmm the posts I replied to have been deleted. Anyway I've reported the thread as off topic for the moment.

I shouldn't bother deleting your posts, there have been some reasonably valid points made. Yes there is a problem with children from families that came from other countries going to school and not knowing English at any level. I have had a report straight from a teacher that she struggles like hell in some classes because of the amount of children who come from families that don't speak English and it is impossible to teach them as she needs to teach them English first albeit we are talking about very young children.

Unfortunately UKIP has stirred up plenty of problem, they have highlighted a few incidents and made it sound like it is the norm and they are on the whole loony party.

I have still not forgotten the case where an Indian couple killed their daughter in front of their other children because she wanted to dress and act like other people in this country which included learning English. There is a huge culture problem with some particular immigrants from certain countries who do not wish to integrate but expect to be treated as they desire.

Most people coming in from East Europe actually work damn hard. The problem is that English people on the whole are lazy. I have not yet met anybody in my working experience who actually gives a shit about getting the job right. Their priority is to get paid and they will do what it takes to get paid and that is all. I came back from Italy eight years ago and I was used to working my bollocks off, and where ever I went people were very happy with me and asked me to come back to work again. That is how I got the job I am in, that is how without a degree I ended up working as an engineer, because I showed an interest in getting things done for my employer and I showed that I was willing to work. Most people brought up in this country go off to university and get a pointless degree and then decide that only a certain job is right for them and refuse all other work. And then they complain that immigrants who want to work are taking their jobs.

Just got an email from some arse from BroadbandTV (2nd biggest MCN in the world) that said "I've signed bigger channels in my sleep.".
