That's why, if you are going the full IP route, it is good to take out patents in the high value countries - the ones where sales of such a product would be significant.

As I understand it, the problem with this is there is no such thing as a "global" patent.  There are some countries that have grouped together where a single patent is honoured by all the members - but such groups are not widespread.  It will be necessary to prepare a number of patent applications, which will not be a cheap exercise - and the requirements for each can differ, adding to the cost.
PCT: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patent_Cooperation_Treaty

However, filing a PCT patent only gives you a 2 year window to file your patent in each individual country they cover where you wish to have your IP rights.  Going here, you will need a patent agent who is familiar with translating and filing your patent throughout the world.

I basically came up with the idea of what's now called IaaS (Infrastructure as as Service), back in 2004 or 2005, I think it was?  One problem at the time was the lack of fine-grained access control in vCenter, or this might have even pre-dated vCenter.  I don't think I could have given customers console access to only their VMs, and nobody else's, without giving everybody their own vCenter, or even their own host(s).
