Error saving PCB
« on: December 14, 2016, 12:35:49 pm »
Hi!
I've been learning Altium Designer (17) for a little while now, and there's espesially one issue I haven't been able to figure out yet.
I've designed a four layer board with four schematic files with a "Top Level" to tie them all together. All components are from my own custom component library.

The "save error" I'm about to describe seems to appears if there's been a while since I last saved, and a lot of changes to the board. When trying to save the PCB file (Circuit.PcbDoc) I first get this warning message:

after clicking Yes, this message appears:

No matter what I do, I can't save or duplicate the file, and the only option is (as far as I know) to close the file and loose all recent changes. Have anybode seen this error before?

What about opening the last "History Backup" file?

Also take a look at your Altium license.

Does it say "Infinite"?

File modification and permission warnings/errors can be avoided by saving into a new file.  Then close out things, check that the old and new files are as they should be, and continue.  Say, by deleting the old one and renaming the new file, or saving the new file as the original filename.

If /that/ doesn't work, you may have...limited options.  Like, DXP core is crashing so hard that it can't even save anymore, and your last 10 minutes or whatever of work are toast.

Can the dot characters in the file path be a problem (h.bull.laudm) ?
Also is enough free space on the hard drive?

It seems already the file is saved to your system. The error seems like duplicate file is there.

This is a problem even in AD17 and AD18. It has to do with the file being stored to a network share (even a mapped network share). You can use save as and save it to a local drive, quit altium, copy the file(s) where they belong and restart, oftentimes having to update the project as well because it will have "helpfully" remembered that you saved to a local drive.

It has nothing to do with syncing software nor altium licensing. I've seen this exact problem with my wife's accounting software as well. Some applications are just not network-aware and throw up their hands when something doesn't work perfectly the first time due to network timing or some other minor network issue.

I had exactly the same problem recently as the OP and it seem to happen after I made a lot of modifications to the board so then I only made a few mods at a time before saving the file. Now the problem seems to have gone away for now. Bazaar to say the least !

cheers

I have also seen this problem in AD17. The PCB files seems to get 'saved' as .$$$ files.
I think with me the issue was present when working on large designs and using a USB memory stick for storing/loading the projects from and as sometimes these devices get disconnected, I thought the issue was because of that. Have not seen this in AD18 yet.

This happen to me.
I formatted my computer and I use one hd for system and one for data.
Altium files are in this second hd and security permissions are set to old user.
After I take owner and total control of files, Altium was able to save again.
