Actually, it's the opposite. The windings attract each other, because the current in adjacent windings is flowing in the same direction.
But what about all the parallel magnetic field lines running in the same direction down the center of the coil? Won't they cause an outward (radial) force on the windings, tending to increase the diameter of the coil?
