How noisy is a Rigol DP832?
« on: June 18, 2018, 08:38:39 pm »
Just lost a TTi PL310 supply due to a fault unfortunately.  Getting fed up of arguing with old stuff so am looking at a Rigol DP832.

How noisy is the fan on these? Already have a DS1054Z and DG1022Z so in terms of them would be good.

The fan is thermally controlled and large, but still pretty noisy. IMHO, it's too loud for a home-office. Might be ok in a corporate lab. Noisier than a DS1000Z at idle I think, although with a lower pitch as the fan is larger.

It's a great candidate for fan swapping (plenty of information on the forum).

Screw that then. My bench is in the living room :( ... thanks for the feedback. I don’t want to modify it.

Managed to fix the thurlby supply by reseating connectors anyway.

If you ever need a little cheap and pretty much indestructible PSU have a look at MCH-K305D.
Fan cycles infrequently in ordinary bench usage and they're fairly quiet when it's on.

One of the few threads on them:

Otherwise the SPD3303X-E's are pretty good ......and extremely quiet at low V/A settings.

Absolutely cannot be a switching supply. This is driving RF gubbins. My specialist RF switcher is even too noisy (has noise offset control)

SPD3303X-E looks possible. Will investigate that after I've had some kip. Thanks for the suggestion.

Not the same price range, but the new Keysight E36313A is essentially silent at idle/low load.

I did look at one of them but the one with three independent outputs is way more expensive than the baseline unit.

Never noticed the noise of the DP832 on the bench at work. Lots of equipment running and kinda got used to the whir of fans.

Bought another one for the home workshop / office and by Jesus I notice it now.

Waiting for it to run out of warranty (few months left) and then I’ll change the fan over for a quieter one.

I do like the TTi power supplies. As long as other staff members don’t put things on top completely covering the air holes, they last for a long time.

For future reference the BK 1739 is linear and fanless and has roughly the same output specs as the PL310.  Its list price is high but I got it on sale for under $200US on Amazon.
