Ocean Controls is an online store and engineering firm focused on industrial and hobbyist electronics. We're looking for someone to come in two days a week to help with electronics assembly and testing, packing and shipping of orders, and to help answer customer enquiries the come in by phone and email.

Basic Skills Required:
  • Electronics assembly including soldering (mostly through-hole, some surface-mount)
  • Basic hardware assembly (use of hand tools)
  • Electronics troubleshooting (use of a power supply, multimeter and other tools to verify function)
  • Ability to pick stock from inventory, pack an order for safe shipping
  • Ability to use accounting software to enter orders, prepare orders for shipment
  • Ability to deal with customer enquiries by phone, email and at the shop front

Role:
The job is ideally suited to an Electrical / Electronics Engineering undergraduate with 1-2 days spare. Ocean Controls is a small business and our employees are expected to take on multiple roles. We currently need more hands to help our with assembly, shipping and handling customer enquiries. The role, however, may evolve to include product development, (circuit design, board layout, firmware programming), custom project development (working with customers to create a specification, quoting, PLC and HMI programming, configuring, assembling testing, iterating) and marketing (market analysis, creating advertising material) as suits the employee's skills.

Hours:
One or two days per week, any days Monday to Friday. Our preference is two full days 9:00 to 5:00. We'd be happy to work out half days, though (e.g. 9:00 to 1:00 or 1:00 to 5:00). The hours worked can also expand during holiday periods if we've got the work.

Location:
Ocean Controls is located in Seaford, Victoria on the Mornington Peninsula. We're about 15 minutes walk from Seaford or Kananook Railway stations on the Frankston line. There's free street parking available all day.

Skills / Experience we'd consider advantageous:
  • Electronics project development (circuit design, PCB layout, design for manufacture)
  • Microcontroller programming
  • Knowledge and experience of accounting software - we're using MYOB but are expecting to soon transition to Xero.
  • Spoken Mandarin, as many of our suppliers are in mainland China, or Korean.
  • Experience picking stock, packing stock for shipment, preparing paperwork for couriers
  • Website design and Linux server administration
  • Graphic design
