Electronics careers in Australia
« on: December 28, 2016, 12:15:01 am »
Hey guys,
I am new to this forum and wanted to ask about Australian careers in electronics engineering. I am coming towards the end of my Electrical Engineering degree and have to specialise further. Electronics has been the most interesting to me but I am worried about jobs in the industry particularly for graduates. Wouldn't be too picky but anything around hardware would interest me the most. Sorry if this is in the wrong section.
Thanks,
Will

If i was you i would get familar with SBC hardware and programming.
Mobile computing such as IOS and Android development.
PCB design and layout complete with how to source and manage a project.
How to fault find and reverse engineer electronic boards.

This should cover most of present and future requirements.

Forgot what area of electronics you want to get into, think about what area of society interests you the most and go into that.
e.g.
If you find medicine fascinating, then look into the medical engineering field.
If you like research, look into a university or CSIRO job.
If you like military defence, look into a defence job.
If you like robots get into mechatronics etc.

You don't say what uni or what specialist options are available, so hard to help directly on course options.

Most of the graduates in EE don't get to gain experience in those industrial fields during their studies (otherwise they would have take on Biomedical Eng/Mechanical Eng degree), Plus- in my country it's seems like it's very hard for a non-experienced embedded developer (HW/SW/FW) to enter most of these non Semiconductor/computing/consumer electronic companies .
(aka NOT: Intel,Mellanox,Sandisk,Qualcomm,Broadcom etc.) Startups in medical/robotics especially expect you to be experienced.

Should a graduate take a risk and insist on getting his first job in the desired field (even if it can take a lot of time working on self-projects in order to get the job) or even start from another position (such as Field application engineer /Tests engineer)

or he should join one of those general easy-to-get-in computing/electronics companies just to make sure he has enough money to "breath" (and stay there for at least an year for his good reputation)?
