KiCad 5 – A New Generation
2018-07-22

After almost a year after the release of KiCad 4.0.7, the KiCad development team is proud to present a new and improved KiCad 5.0 release!

The stable release version 5.0.0 is made from the stable 5.0 branch.

KiCad binaries should be available now or in the very near future for download for Windows, Macos and Linux, see the download page for guidance.

Instructions for packagers can be found on the download page describing how to build from source . Below are also some packaging packaging related changes mentioned in comparison to the 4.0 releases.

The official KiCad libraries have also seen a lot of improvement in managment, style and consistency by the librarians, read more about this on the new library section on the website.

Thank you to all developers, packagers, librarians, document writers, translators, and everyone else who helped make this release possible.

The list of changes doesn't mention the much improved footprint wizard interface(s).  Definitely worth checking out!  In many cases using the wizard to create a regular standard footprint and then modifying it as needed (e.g. to delete pins or pads for a relay or add a thermal pad) is really super quick and easy.

I am actually more looking forward to V6 road map; improvements on the GUI.
That has been the main source of frustration (up till the fact that it's unusable)

I only don't understand this;

(when in doubt about any particular UI solution, check how it has been done in a certain proprietary app that is very popular among OSHW folks and do exactly opposite).

Good software companies spend a lot of time making things work and giving the user a good experience in terms of user interface (well at least they try).
Why would you go right against that?
Or is that just being the though cool kid who just likes to bash other people for no particular reason?

Shame.

Switched from nightly to 5.0.0 stable on Windows x64, loads of assert errors, switched to x32 to have C++ runtime errors in PCBNew, switched back to nightly, all is well again.

I see the bugs I am experiencing are already on the bug tracker, the worst "stable" release so far....

Are you using Windows 10?  Seems none of the developers have it to test against so squashing bugs have been a problem for that particular instance.

I am using it in certain hosts. In fact, I am using the worst combination of all: Windows 10 with a 4k screen.

Definitely some of us that use Windows 10 primarily :X

The problem is known, the packages for release were built slightly wrong (debug turned on) meanwhile nightlies were always built right.
The package maintainer however went on vacation right after he posted the "broken" build....so things are awkward by the timing.

I've just noticed they have uploaded the recompiled(fixed?!) V5.0.0 binaries (dated 25th July) for Windows, i'm about to download and give them a go, suggest anyone else who had issues before do the same  to see if it remedies.

Yes, the 5.0 packages now on download have asserts removed/fixed.

The 32-bit package may still be funny, I need to hunt down the runtime it suddenly needs and add it to the installer as a pre-req I guess.

Forgot they were both 1GB in size...
Downloaded both, ran both, so far so good, no crashes, x64 nor x32, had a little play around, all seems good.

I'll give it a try on Linux Debian 9 Strech x64 7 on I7 third generation quad-core HT laptop.

Here is the result of the sucessfull compilation and the notes regarding (check log attachment )its steps. Be aware of the compilation error in ngspice and update enviroment.

You have obviously never used any Mentor Graphics product.
