Selection not visible in schematic editor
« on: July 31, 2018, 01:39:58 pm »
Now that KiCad 5 is released, I have started playing around with a bit.

There is some strange behavior going on, where I am not entirely sure if it is a bug or not.
This happens in the Schematic Editor and as well in the Symbol Library Editor. I have not yet used the PCB or Footprint Editor.

When I select something, I have no indication that I have actually selected something one the thing that I selected. I see that I have selected something in the status bar at the bottom of the window, but nothing in the drawing area shows what I have selected.
Additionally, when I drag to select multiple items, KiCad immediately attaches the items I have selected to my cursor to move them. For larger selections (if a rectangle with 12 pins can be called large) this is incredibly slow on my machine.

I am using Kicad 5.0.0 64bit Edition on Windows 10. Is this behavior a bug, or working as intended? Or is it something I may be able to configure?

EDIT: Somewhat related, so I did not want to open a new Topic...
Where, if any, does KiCad store Crashdumps? I am not sure what I did exactly, but just now, using the Symbol Editor, KiCad crashed fully without any error message. It just closed from one second to the next, and I lost my symbol I was working on  :-- Yes, I know, somewhat my own fault for not saving, but shouldn't any modern software do autosaves?

Latest version of the KiCad?

In Windows did not find where to store the log files. In Linux, work errors can be tracked through the terminal.

I advise you to write on https://bugs.launchpad.net/kicad

5.0.0 stable, but that alone does not seem to mean much. As far as I see, by now they have updated the installer twice without incrementing the version number...

Yeah, I could open a bug report, but I know from my own experience that such a report, for a not reproducible error, without any logs, is virtually useless.
That is why I asked where KiCad stores such logfiles.

By the way, I think that the selection issue is really working as intended  :-//
On a Windows 7 machine, also 5.0.0 stable, the behavior is the same.

At work KiCad5, the machine on Windows 7, no problems. Tomorrow I'll make a screenshot of the version of the KiCad.

Maybe you have an older version.

See the attached picture. I selected the LED above the ~seg4 net using the M key (for move). Notice the red circles on the pins? That's the indication that the symbol is selected. Look at the LED to the right of this one. It's not selected, so it has no little circles.

Ok, when I hit the M or G keys to move or drag, I see the same as in your screenshot.
I am just so used from every other graphics related program where you can select objects, that simply clicking shows you the selection.

By now I have learned that KiCad handles this very differently. The following are a couple of observations I made in the schematic editor:

- drawing a box works differently than virtually everywhere else. I like how KiCad handles this though
- to copy/paste an existing object, I have to "box-select" the object. Simply clicking it is not enough
- I just noticed that I do not have to click on an object before I hit M or G  :-+
- "Box-selecting" attaches the selection to my mouse and I drag the selection around, which can be quite slow with a big selection
- sometimes, when I click a symbol, I get a "clarify your selection" box

I am starting to glimpse the power KiCad has, and I will continue using it. So far I have not encountered any show stoppers, but the program could be a bit more stable. By now I have had 2 complete crashes and one occurrence where the schematic editor did not take any commands (including saving). Nothing was reproducible though. I just have to remember the old gamer credo: save early, save often  ;D
