I tried one of those passive vacuum pens but had hard time to make it to work. Ended up with a cheap electric vacuum pump which works much better. Good luck.

These things are totally useless, apart from as a source of a handle and tips to make  a proper tool from. You need a foot-operated pump that supplies continuous suction.
See my viddeo for more info :

Mike, very well done video, many good ideas.
The trick with the double sided sticky tape brings me on an idea for my PnP machine.
When sticked precisely (by the holes in the 8mm tape) the machine can pick it up directly from the tape,
a good solution for short tapes without reels.

Currently I put short 8mm tapes into a groove to hold them in place.
But when I remove the cover tape, some parts are jumping off due to vibrations, especially if plastic tapes are used.
Now i will stick the 8mm tapes on the double sided sticky tape which holds it strong enough,
thanks for this idea.

And yes, these cheap sucking pens are totally useless.
