PCB cross-section is included with the order... That's a first!

Tried a new PCB house. The order came with a small piece of PCB cut and encapsulated in plastic for inspection. Wow, I've never seen anything like that in 17 years!  :o

Every production pcb batch we order gets one. Has the report for copper thicknesses and via thicknesses etc... they grind one side so it goes through a via for confirmation they are not lying to us.

A friend of mine recently ordered some pcbs from a cheap online service and got one of the plugs as well.

If you have a good enough microscope / macro lens on a camera and a reference slide, you can do measurements of the copper yourself.

Oooh, nice!

Who does that?  And when -- is there a flag on the order form to receive a test coupon, or do they do it for orders of more than X pieces/area, or?

I've also not seen anyone that does that, but I'm aware of the method, as I've seen (and done!) metallurgical sectioning before.

We always get a cross-section for blind and buried mixed material boards. Makes me look important when I'm at the microscope...
There's never anything wrong I can see.

Huh, neat. Looks like it's cast in the plastic first, then ground and polished. Didn't think that was common for test coupons like this.

5pcb do this as well. Also a piece (usually a quarter or so) that they used for solderability testing and a five page test report.

Makes sense for multilayers with custom stacks... These are simple 2 layers :)
