Extenders for the Datron 4800 series of calibrators?
« on: July 18, 2017, 05:46:13 pm »
Are you interested in purchasing extenders for a Datron 4800 series calibrator?   If so I'm considering getting some made up.

Price will depend on how much interest and they won't be small PCBs.  By way of guidance, back in 2011 I had 25 extenders of a similar size to the large boards made and the unit cost was USD28.

Let me know if you are interested.

Cheers
Dave

Great, I would buy some. How do you plan to cover the different ones?

Argh! Are you saying that each board in a 4808 requires a different extender?  That's a rather unusual approach to say the least.

I've not looked this in detail yet, so I thought I'd only need two extenders, one for the large boards, and one for the small socketed PCB.

I have never opened up my 4808 (will soon have to for the battery replacement) but I remember having seen a backplane and that had connectors spead all over the place. What seems to be possible though from what I saw is to build a generic adapter for each specific connector type/width and then just combine them in a certain slot that is being worked on. Thats maybe the way to go.

With a friend we have bought on Ebay a 4808 motherboard and after careful examination and cross-examination with the 4708, 4000, 4200... we have, we came to the conclusion that you neeed only two extenders : one generic having the largest connectors choosen in each pcb card (all the same connectors)and a cut one at the left to accomodate the self mounted on the mother board (the 4th or 5th pcb I don't have the calibrator on hand now). The little everywhere positioned partial connectors for each pcb will find their place in the various and identical large connecotors. We have just finished the Gerber file and trying to find a company to produce a prototype because the dimensions a very critical and an error of positioning the gap between the connectors (0.001") shifts the contacts of the 4th, 5th connector and we are at the limits of our public software.

Great stuff - if you beat me to the delivery, I shan't complain :)

Did you find any of those open ended connectors?

PS Dont forget extenders for the HV board and the 35V board ...

Extender is finished. We have to source the connectors and to put the various cuts to accomodate the pieces of epoxy burried into the various connectors to align the boards (sorry, I don't know the English word for these small pieces !). Another extender must be cut to accept the selfs on the mother board.

We have found a company supplying such connectors but, of course, there is a minimum quantity/billing amount. However we have enough  connectors to desolder on our mother board to build our 2 extenders (for the power supplies and amplifier boards, HP common extenders). .
