2x10 pin JTAG to 2x3 pin adapter
« on: January 12, 2019, 03:48:33 am »
I purchased an Ice JTAG programmer/debugger off Ebay and when I tried to hook it up I noticed the two dev boards I have that even have a programming port (an arduino mega clone and an adafruit metro) both have 2x3 pins while the programming is 2x10.

Two questions:   Will this programmer even work with these boards?
Is there a 2x5 to 2x3 adapter that even exists?   It looks like Sparkfun used to make one but it is "retired".

Thoughts?   The idea was to use Atmel studio to program and debug these things

This is a clone of a very outdated device, I'm not sure how well it is supported by modern tools.

But here is a connection table from 10-pin JTAG to 6-pin SPI interface used on the Arduino: https://www.microchip.com/webdoc/jtagicemkii/jtagicemkii.connecting_spi.html You can simply use flying wires to make a connection.

Thank you both.....very helpful information

Update:   I found an AVR Ice adapter on Ebay for $8 and free shipping that should be here in a week.    Hopefully it works.  I did find the parts to build an adapter cable but it cost more to ship than the actually parts so I was glad to find the adapter.
Again, thank you all for your help!

Update 2:    So it came but it appears the device is too old to communicate with the board.     It has to be a JTAG-3 programmer and I don't think that's what it is...consequently while the computer recognized it and I was  able to select it in AS7 it could not read my board.   Check on line (AVR Freaks) confirmed my suspicions.
