anybody using Asus Xtion as cheap LiDAR ?
« on: October 16, 2014, 11:02:39 pm »
hi guys
anybody using Asus Xtion as cheap LiDAR ?
it could be fun, and OpenNI is supporting Xtion.
So, in case, any example of real usage ?

internally its pretty much 1:1 same thing as kinect, and you can get used kinect at <$50, so why would you want to pay ~$200 for asus?

btw they both have range limitations

Hmm, BOSCH range finder/distance meter for $70 new will probably do job much better than any of these if you only care about LIDAR functionality not 3D.

because Xtion
1) is smaller
2) consumes less power
3) does not require power supply (except USB)

contro analysis
1) lower drivers quality: that it not a problem if used as "LiDAR"
2) does not work with some USB controllers (especially USB 3.0): it may be a problem with some USB-hub or linux embedded boards, so you have to check it out
3) no motor, it allows only manual positioning: not a problem, in my application the unit needs to be mounted into a fixed holder

p.s.
guys, i am looking for a LiDAR for robotics application, i am afraid that the BOSCH range finder is useless for my application.

something like that  :D

What sort of distance do you need?

Have you looked at the Sharp GP2Y series of optical distance sensors?  They have some out to a few meters, IIRC.  I had an FAE bring some samples by a few months back along with a project he was working on (gesture control using those sensors to detect hand motions).  It worked pretty well and the parts are commonly available - and frequently used in robotics applications.
It's not always the most popular person who gets the job done.

The original Kinect can be hacked to be completely USB powered. Maybe the new Kinect can be hacked in a similar manner.

yep, nice to know, thank you :D

i like the Xtion also because it can be used in "lidar emulation", you only need a rotating base
