arduino board with debug header
« on: February 13, 2016, 09:08:55 am »
Hi All,

I like the idea to be able to buy a ready-made board, and then run my own software on it. I've looked at the arduino boards, but as far as i can tell, they all lack a debugging header. I'm not a good enough programmer to write my programs first time right, so I need a debugger.

Are there any ATmega based board out there I can buy with a debugging header?

Kind regards,
Cedric

If you'll be debugging just stick a DIP AtMega in a decent breadboard and you get all the headers you want...

I always use the serial port when I am debugging an Arduino. I think this is the easiest way for Arduino debugging.

Arduino web page describes debugging methods based on free Visual Studio 2015 with Visual Micro extension.

I did net yet try, but sounds a good way?

I have a clutch of Arduino UNO clones and they all have the six pins you need to debug.

Here's a random example...

The 3x2 grid of the pins on the end will work for DebugWire

(Not that I've ever tried it)

the Arduino "auto-reset" circuitry interferes with DebugWire, so you can't use the ISP connector for debugging unless you modify the board to remove the auto-reset circuitry.

That, and I think the cap on the reset line needs to be disconnected. If I remember correctly, the old Duemilanova model actually had jumper pads (or whatever you call them) where you could cut the trace or re-solder as desired.
