Attiny Fuse Recovery

When using attiny, particularly 8pdip versions, you may have to use the reset pin for gpio purposes. Once you do that, it can no long be programmed by your regular programmer.

Your option at this point is high voltage serial programming.

I put together a high voltage serial programmer on a pic16f684. It requires a few external components and supports lcd display.

First, the schematic:

Two leds indicating the progress of the reprogramming;

The button controls the progress;

Q1 + its resistors apply 12v to the avr's RST pin;

Seven wires to the AVR, including the ground.

The HC164 +  LCD are optional: they display the avr type, fuse setting and reprogrammed fuse - for confirmation purposes only.

Here is the code starting up.

It read an attiny85, shows its id / signature, and the existing fuse (0x62dfff, in the form of extended fuse:high fuse:low fuse).

The leds start to blink, waiting for user to push the button to start resetting the fuses to their default values (in this case, 0x62dfff).

Once the user presses the  button, reprogramming starts and the program will then read back the fuse values and display them.

Some considerations:

1) you will need to provide your own 12v and 5v sources: the 12v source for high voltage programming and the 5v to power the pic and lcd;

2) the code supports ATTINY25/45/85 (tested), ATTINY24/44/84 (untested), and ATTINY11/12/13.

3) the code runs at 500Khz, and can run down to 125Khz. Current consumption is practically nil.

Potential enhancements:

1) move it to an avr - should be fairly easy;

2) use 7-segment led as a display device - this will require a higher pin-count device.

I did just that,

Running on 16F1936 + 4-digit 7-segment led display.

As you can see, the pin assignment is chosen so that the led sits right on top of the chip - using the chip's output resistance for current limiting.

There rest of the circuit is fairly common.

BTW, the code is written to drive either common anode or common cathode displays, by commenting out a macro. Thus you see two displays on the schematic. When building it, you need only one.

The beast in action:

1) it first reads the target device's signature and display it, waiting for user confirmation before proceeding.

Here, it is connected to a ATTINY85 (signature 0x930b)

2) once the user confirmed the chip, by pressing the button, the program writes the default fuse setting (0x00dfff = extended fuse:high fuse:low fuse*) to the device . It then reads the fuses back and display just the high fuse:low fuse on the led.

In this case, we got it right.

*: the default fuse varies slightly from target device to target device.

Again, the code supports the ATTINY25/45/85 devices (as tested), as well as ATTINY24/44/84 (untested) and ATTINY11/12/13.

General operations:

1) both trunks follow the same HV serial programming specification in the datasheet; Different fuse values are used to for different chips, based on the detected target device signature.

2) The 16x2 lcd version simply writes to the lcd and follows a linear process; The 7-segment led version utilizes timer0 interrupt (in this particularly case, the chip runs at 1Mhz Fcy and the timer0 prescaler is set to 8:1, so each digit is shown for 8*256us = 2ms). In the isr, individual digits are updated from a display buffer (of 4 bytes, containing the font information for each digit). The isr runs in the background and the user only needs to update the display buffer when new information needs to be sent to the 7-segment display, the isr handles the rest.

The basic led display can also used in others, like a simple volt meter, a ammeter, or a frequency meter: TMR1 takes the incoming pulse train and TMR2/4/6 gates the input -> you have a frequency meter with minimal parts count.

TMR1 on this particular mcu is asynchronous so it is perfect for a frequency meter.
