Can a Z84C0010PEG be used in place of a normal NMOS Z80A ?
« on: April 10, 2017, 09:51:12 am »
I thought that I had a Z80A but I don't.

RS only do http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/microcontrollers/6259078/

Would this drop straight into a circuit designed for a Z80A running at 4MHz ?

Thanks

Probably, let you know next week when I get around to using the ones I have here :)

If you want a 'proper' NMOS Z80A PM me and I'll post you one.

In general I would expect that 10MHz part to be a drop in replacement for the 4MHz part, however there will be a shorter time between the reference clock edge for a given transition on the control lines/bus and that transition actually happening.

Whether this means the faster part won't work will depend on the system that you plug it into. If you have flip-flops triggered on clock edges as well as control signals it might be worth reviewing the timing but you'd be pretty unlucky to have any issues.

I'd just plug it in and see.

Thanks guys. I picked one up from RS.

I'll need to start building around it before I know how I get on with it.
