FLIR Lepton now at Digikey
« on: May 26, 2015, 08:58:40 pm »
Digikey has started selling the Lepton in 25 and 50 deg FOV versions, with and without shutters and has a FLIR branded breakout for $40. Really good pricing too. No pics of the breakout, kind of curious what is on it.

I paid $200 for my higher-resolution seek thermal usb module.

That is very interesting on FLIRs part. I think Dave and David will be happy to hear that for their project.
It should make possible a lot of things that even a year ago were very hard to do.

For anyone else buying this, make sure to get the Molex socket designed for the camera.  The Lepton package is not recommended for hand soldering.

Also, all the different modules should be compatible with this socket so you can try out different modules to see which one fits your needs best.

They are all the same resolution, and all are limited to 9Hz  due to export regulations.  The difference between the current models are 25deg, 50deg, and 50deg w/shutter.

From what a friend tells me that works on commercial infrared systems, thermopile sensors like used in the Seek are not nearly as good as microbolometer. The only advantage is they dont need a NUC. Well, that and they are cheaper.

For those looking at the 25 degrees FOV that is a pretty tight FOV. I have a couple DRS cameras in 320x240 and 640x480 and to get an idea what 25 degrees is at about 4" from the camera I can see about a 4" circle. It is pretty tight, good for UAVs.
