installing Quartus II web edition cyclone 2 FPGA
« on: November 08, 2013, 12:05:54 am »
Got the following FPGA DEV boards:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Altera-CycloneII-EP2C5T144-FPGA-Mini-Development-Board-/150835820710?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item231e83f8a6

I installed Quartus II 13.1 web edition free it installed only to realise its not compatable with with the cyclone 2 device as theres no option in the software and when I point it to the cyclone 2 divice support file it does not recodnise it.

I went on to try an older file that supported the cyclone 2 FPGA device 13.0 sp1 when the software is towards the end of the install it comes up with an error system left alone something strange like this.

Can Anyone she any light on how to install thses files correct way of doing this on windows xp.

Cheers

You had to install Quartus with the cyclone series QDZ file

I attempted to install the correct versions 13.0 and 13.0 sp1 that do support the cyclone 2 qdz version.

Still no luck with these though. The only version that does install  is 13.1 which does not support the cyclone 2 qdz.

:o That's weird. As far as I know all Cyclone series are support in both the web edition (free) and subscription edition. I just took a look at Altera's website, but the Cyclone (I) and Cyclone II aren't listed anymore in the supported families for Quartus II. (getting phased out maybe?). Yet the Cyclone II page still says that the Cyclone II family is supported by the free Quartus II edition. I seem to recall that last time I installed Quartus II, during installation you get to choose which families of CPLD's and FPGA's you want to install. IIRC the Cyclone II was part of that installation...

I looked. Sure enough, they dropped EP2C devices.

In that case, 12.1sp1 was one I ran for quite a while.

Avoid 10.x and 11.x like the plague. They are both Xilinx-level trainwrecks. First versions right after the ui was moved from native win32 to Qt.

As it turns out you can still download previous versions or Quartus II that do support the Cyclone II familiy. According to a topic on the Altera forums the Cyclone II is supported up to v13.0 (http://www.alteraforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=42758)

Edit: ...as the TS already found out, dûh. Time to start reading other persons posts more closely |O

Ouch.

Thanks for the heads-up.

I have several of those mini Cyclone II boards that you mention (I think they are great) and I regularly use 13.0 sp1 that I downloaded a few weeks ago (it was "latest version" at the time). I'll have to keep the 13.0 installer safe then in case they remove the option to download older versions...

Didn't know 13.1 removed cyclone II
