JTAGICE MKII aftermarket cable suggestion
« on: February 18, 2017, 04:11:39 am »
Anyone who is a frequent user of the genuine Atmel JTAGICE MKII will have a gripe with the the PFC ribbon cable that fractures with ease. A stupid idea. Atmel charges a king's ransom to replace the cable - around $40 USD for the "kit". However I found a MUCH cheaper pin compatible replacement for around $3.50 USD.

They are almost impossible to find, but you can get them here...

Longer cable (about 8")...
http://au.element14.com/wurth-elektronik/687730200002/cable-ffc-rev-0-5mm-200mm-30way/dp/1908559 (Only 3 left, sorry, after I bought 3 others two days ago)

Shorter cable (about 6")...
http://au.element14.com/wurth-elektronik/687730152002/ffc-cable-30pos-152mm-60v-white/dp/2520275 (Plenty in stock)

I doubt you will find them as cheap anywhere else. They are 30 pin, 0.5mm pitch and reverse side contacts.

Taobao and Alibaba do not count. Also.. that clearly isn't remotely the same thing.

Lots of them available on ebay. These are the ones I use on my JTAG MKII. I found them easier to work with than the standard flat PFC cables

Good find on eBay, but when a cable stuffs up you need one immediately, not in a month from Hong Kong (or China). Element 14 is overnight. In any case it pays to have a few on hand in advance using a kanban approach. The way the cable maker designed the narrow middle part of the cable highlights the nonsense design by Atmel.

Yep, I bought 10 on EBay for future use. When my original one broke Farnell didnt have any stock, so I repaired it with conductive ink. Held long enough to get the ebay ones. I wish I knew what went through their minds when they released it with a FPC cable like that.

I just went to order these as the ribbon on my JTAGICE is damaged, but it appears that the seller's "Worldwide shipping" excludes a very significant amount of the world including the UK :D

That's the style of cable used on the JTAGICE3 and Atmel ICE, not the JTAGICE MkII.  Except it looks like that listing the connectors aren't reversed the way that the Atmel cables are (one connector is installed backwards on the cable so the pins are reversed end-to-end), but it's hard to be sure from the photos.
