New ARM cores...
« on: October 27, 2016, 09:58:28 am »
ARM announced (presumably as part of ARM TechCon, which was this week in California) two new microcontroller (Cortex-M) cores based on the ARMv8-M architecture: Cortex-M23 and Cortex-M33.   They're touting security enhancements.  Apparently the v8-M architecture was announced last year in higher-end CPUs, but I didn't notice because I pay less attention there :-(   It looks like the M23 is M0+-like (with additions), and the M33 is M4-like (DSP, FPU)

So much for the super easy to understand naming convention! M0-7

EDIT: It did last 12 years, so that's pretty impressive anyhow.

Their naming conventions have always sucked.  "Our ARM9TDMI with architecture ARMv4T is old but faster than the CM0 with ARMv6-M, but not so much like CM4 with ARMv7E-M.  Use a CA32 with ARMv8A for real performance, but CM23 with ARMv8-M is our low-power entry."

Well, they are British and this sounds like a Monty Python sketch  :-DD
