89c51 non-isp programmer
« on: February 17, 2013, 06:32:50 pm »
I'd be glad for links and recommendations for 8051 series programmer. I have several of older non-isp chips around and i would like to play with them again. I have programmer for 89c51 and 89cx051 [20pin version] but this is parallel port based and in my new lappy there is no LPT.
I'd strongly prefer DIY version - i propably have all the parts but i do not have money.

Well, it would certainly be easiest to start with some other microcontroller; preferably something with a lot of pins that was itself easily programmable with a modern computer (or perhaps you could borrow a computer with a parallel port for long enough to program an 89c51 to make a programmer from?)  An Arduino MEGA or Sanguino would probably be a good starting point.

I have some 89c51s too; just connecting all those wires seems like a major PITA compared to a modern serial-programmable controller. :-(  Mine are LQFP, so just popping them into a socket doesn't seem likely, either.  Sigh.

The slight issue is that the programmer itself needs an 89C51 to be programmed... maybe then you'd have to "bootstrap" via DIP switches and pushbuttons?

Those designs are OK and i do have means of programing bin/hex into 89c51 but there is an issue with PC software - i checked out all those programmers on this webpage and the only pc software that is still there is for LPT version.

As you said price was an issue, these are probably not for you but have a look anyway.
