SOLVED: Quartus II Web Edition 13.1 on Windows 10
« on: January 15, 2018, 11:07:05 am »
I'm trying to download some software so I can play with my DE2 Terasic board... My understanding is that the latest version of the free s/w that supports Cyclone II is 13.1 so I downloaded the ISO and have mounted this.

I can get the installation welcome screen to appear but when I ask it to install nothing happens.

I have tried as both normal and admin user  and also tried Run As Administrator... the click works... it asks for Admin rights if not already admin and then nothing...

Advice appreciated.

I'm probably on Windows 10 1709

Thanks in advance

I have Win10 1703 (i uninstalled and blocked 1709 because i couldn't install the media feature pack)

I have installed the latest quartus a couple of weeks ago, i recall having problem launching it so i uninstalled, reinstalled, then i was able to launch the program.
However I have yet to use it so i don't know if it really works

I'm running it fine here, though the internal cygwin (used by its NIOS toolchain) needs to be updated to not error out on W10.

Re-download the install setup from Altera's website.
This once happened to me in Win7 with an earlier Quartus.  It only worked when I manually downloaded the full install file from a direct link using Firefox.  Altera's downloader with IE and Firefox for some reason messed up the downloaded install files for some unusual reason.  It would only partially seem to begin to install.

Also, before re-installing, make sure you DELETE altera's earlier temporary 'extraction/install' folder which may contain corrupt junk, of a corrupt .log in it from your previous install attempts making future install attempts permanently impossible, even though you did a Windows Programs/Features un-install.

Direct download link:  This .exe should install and work...
http://dl.altera.com/13.1/?edition=subscription&platform=windows&download_manager=direct

Dont use the download manager.

Also, Quartus is now WELL beyond version 13.x, we are now at Quartus Prime V17.x...

If you are running a Cyclone II or III, you need to use Quartus 13.0sp1 (Cyclone II) or 13.1 (Cyclone III). There is an extremely popular $15 Cyclone II development board, for example.

At least that is what Altera are saying: https://dl.altera.com/devices/

I have been using the download manager up to now... I'll try the direct download. Thanks.

My DE2 board is Cyclone II so that's what I need at this stage.

You might also try to run the installer in compatibility mode.

Another option is run it in a VM, I use Quartus II on Win7 but iirc it's native to *nix and is well supported on Linux. Getting the USB programming cable to work with a VM can be a hassle but my friend had it working on his Mac a while ago.

I discovered my problem... my PC has subtle memory issues... this became evident when I started MD5 check summing the downloaded .iso files and getting different answers every now and again for the SAME file.  I know it's hard to believe but a memory diagnostic confirmed I had issues (and the crashed before explaining what the issues were).  My PC is ASUS Z170-K with CMK16GX4M2A2400C14 memory... seems like I am not the only one to have this issue...

... will have to try a different PC.

Good luck with the .iso on a new PC.
At least if you went for the 1 file .exe, it tests itself during extraction confirming the download itself has no errors.

At least now I have the image locally on a linux server (no GUI) and it sums consistently

nivag@splat:~$ md5sum Quartus-web-13.0.1.232.iso
690a295c697765efe95f7d62f1cea7ed  Quartus-web-13.0.1.232.iso

Just need to find a PC now

Here's the evidence for the non-believers...

Two files.. OLD_Quartus-web-13.0.1.232.iso and OLD_Quartus-web-13.0.0.156.iso

Checksum the first twice.... gives e7a9f12b4f6b48f693e8031c1a11816a

Checksum the other one (and stress disc/memory caches etc)... gives.. 48df63cab2e2d2bbd0cdd6bd85452317

Then checksum the first again expecting e7a9... but get.... 6a0ebf6295a9acb7b756010cae87ffdb

Which DVD burning tool did you use?
.iso disk mounters are buggy in most versions of windows which is why I prefer the .exe.

When using the .exe, you seem to be getting a fault in the ntdll.dll, you can try older alternate versions of ntdll.dll in your install path.  It's isn't Altera's unpacked Install.exe which is messing up, it's their 'QuartusSetupWeb-13.0.1.232.exe' uncompressor which is crapping out on you before you even make it to the internally run 'Setup.exe'.

Switched to a different PC...

E:\>certutil -hashfile Quartus-web-13.0.1.232.iso MD5
MD5 hash of Quartus-web-13.0.1.232.iso:
690a295c697765efe95f7d62f1cea7ed

(I also ran memtest86 on the original PC and get errors, lots of errors.  Corsair have accepted an RMA on the CMK16GX4M2A2400C14 memory, although of course it could be the ASUS Z170-K controller that has the issue).

It's really interesting how a PC can operate with memory/memory controller issues but only show apparent issues when under significant I/O stress... quite scary really.

PS
I never created a physical DVD but used the Windows in built mount.  However the fundamental issue was random memory errors producing differing results and hence showing up as corruptions.  If you md5 a file, do something and then md5 the file again and get a different result you know you have trouble!

Can you change your ram controller settings in your BIOS.  Instead of sounding like bad memory, it sounds as if your RAS-CAS precharge is set too short in number of clock cycles, or you ram clk is set too fast.
Also try removing your ram modules, clean the pins with an eraser and re-seat them, also swap them.

If you google CMK16GX4M2A2400C14 and ASUS Z170-K you get quite a few sad stories.

I have tried various combinations both 'auto' and XMP profiles.

Removed, shuffled, different sockets tried...

Does it recognise the USB Blaster programmer? Sometimes have to do a few steps to force later Windows to accept the drivers.
