RX480 identify burned chip (irc 3958)
« on: October 31, 2018, 09:12:19 pm »
Hello,
I am very sorry if im wrong here but i didn't know where else to ask.
I recently got a Gigabyte rx480 gpu that didn't work. When i took it apart i noticed a small chip that was burned. After searching for ages i couldn't find anything with the numbers written on it.
On the board itself it is labeled pu1 and in the chip i says irc 3958.
If anyone knows what chip it is, what its used for or if its possible to buy a replacement id be very thankfull.
It would also be interesting to know your thoughts if it was the cause of the gpu failing or if it was just a victim.
Sorry again, im very new to more complex electronics but id like to learn more.

I'm not so sure if it's correct marking. Could you make a good photo (maybe clean with alcohol) of PU2 which is the same IC? BTW you should have posted this in repair section.

Can you post a larger photo of the PCB so we can get an idea of where the chip is positioned on the board. might help us figure out what function this chip performs.

There are quite a few PCB teardowns of RX480's online (quite a few done by a guy called buildziod at actually hardcore overclocking on youtube).
I would guess that it is either a gate driver for the fet's, or a minor voltage rail controller. Maybe a phase doubler.

The part number does seem eerily similar to the IR3598 phase doubler/gate driver that is quite commonly found in video cards. 16qfn package seems to be right as well.
Maybe check to see if this the chip. https://www.infineon.com/dgdl/ir3598.pdf?fileId=5546d462533600a4015355cdad66176d

Thanks
That should be the chip i was searching for.
Here are a clearer picture of pu2 and a picture of the whole card

As mentioned most probably IR3598 (Infineon)

Yeah, should be IR3598. You mixed up 2 digits in the first post, hence I asked for a photo suspecting something is not right. You should also check if VRM MOSFETs it is controlling are not blown up/shorted. They should be somewhere close on the opposite side.
