Does anyone have experience with veritak:

It looks quite good for $50 but I can't work out if it is still being maintained.

Looking at the version history, the software was frequently updated up to the latest release, which is now about three years old. According to the support page, it is also the work of a single person. Try mailing them and ask.

A trial license of modelsim also looks quite good for $0. And it's even in active development.
