Big images now fit the forum
« on: October 29, 2013, 12:30:53 pm »
I've changed the forum CSS so that any attached big images will now be re-sized to fit the forum window, no more scroll bar.
If you want the full size image you can always open it in a new browser tab.

And just to test it...

I like it, no more image resizing by moderators for the newbies!  :)

Yay ... Its time to upload the blurry, raw & huge >10MB per image from the camera and lets hog down Dave's daily backup.  >:D. ... J/K

Seriously, if there is a SMF plugin to filter uploaded image size and/or resolution, that will be the best.

Agreed, it's better to prevent them being uploaded and stored rather than just restricting the size that's viewed. This is a good start though.

Definitely a welcome change ! but I agree with the others - this may just backfire regarding storage / size.
One good? thing about the previous implementation, posters were quickly asked to FIX it.
Hello <tap> <tap> .. is this thing on?

Just need to limit the allowed file size appropriately.

I always just right-click the thumb-nails and open the images in a new tab. Works fine for me  :-+

I've always had limits on file size and number of files.
It's now set to 1MB total per post, and 1MB per file. Down from 3MB/2MB

The attachments directory is now at 6.9GB, which I guess isn't too bad considering the size of the forum now.
But I think it would be off the scale if I didn't have any file size limits imposed.

There seems to be a side effect. When I click on GeoffS's sports photo above, it stays in the poststamp size. It doesn't xpand to fill the page width.
Using FF 24.0 for Ubuntu 12.04.

It was a red haring. When I posted the message above and retried, it worked.

Yeah hard-refreshing the page did the trick, no idea why I did not think of that. Must have been a cached stylesheet or something.
It works fine in Chrome, FF and IE.

File size limits mean you just need to use Flickr and post the BBCode in to the forum....

Hmm, i think the total per post should be bigger. Decently sized and suitable quality JPEG's are usually around 300-400 kB in size. With just 1MB, it would be limited to only 2 or 3 images, unless they become real small or real compressed. I'm thinking of images from PCB's and stuff, where a lot of things are shown and should still be recognizable. I think the previous 3MB was just fine, simply limit the max. size for a single file instead.

Greetings,

Chris

The problem with that is that images can vanish from external sites (or those sites altogether), which would cause those images to disappear from the threads. Storing the images together with the forum gives a better availability as far as posts with images in the forum are concerned.

Chris

Greetings,

And the whole Internet could be taken offline too on the whim of a few governments.

I prefer to control the storage of my own images. Once you upload them you lose all control. And external sites vanishing? Chances are MUCH higher that this forum will die or be relocated (breaking links) long before the more popular image hosting sites are in trouble. And in ten or fifteen years will it really be that important for people to be able to see the LED cube I made in 2013?

The same applies to any text you submit. You'd have a hard time erasing these two sentences from history, for example. Is this a bigger deal for images? Especially since most images on this website aim to document or show some circuit / setup / instrument, not to create a work of art.

And external sites vanishing? Chances are MUCH higher that this forum will die or be relocated (breaking links) long before the more popular image hosting sites are in trouble.
Lets look at the first page of this thread:
https://www.eevblog.com/forum/chat/show-your-multimeter!/
I count six externally linked images, of which three are missing. This is after three years.

Also given the way Flickr is going, I wouldn't bet on it being around in three years. I expect Yahoo! trying to continue to push it into the social media space, failing, and then putting it in maintenance mode until it dies.

And in ten or fifteen years will it really be that important for people to be able to see the LED cube I made in 2013?
Sometimes images are essential for understanding the post, for example shots showing the results of two different grounding arrangements. Or demonstrating a repair. If you don't think old posts are important, then you might as well purge old attachments and posts to save space.

Imagine if one of those popular & high profile image hosting site acquired by a huge online porn enterprise, that will be a fun time to watch if those attached images turned into porn advertisements.  >:D

..."Dude ! Why that legendary circuit that shows the neat and smart techniques in applying a loop back compensation now has a boobs & butt in it ? And that left boob is blocking few important connections around that op-amp, anyone has the original untainted circuit ?" ...  :-DD

It is all too common seeing missing, externally linked photos on various web fora, which can completely ruin the impression of an exchange. Even the large image hosting sites go missing at regular intervals, much more so that small, privately run community sites. Alternatively they suddenly change they policies regarding external linking, once their investors realize they may have a broken business model.

As a consequence I always make a point of scaling and uploading photos to the main site whenever possible.

People will 'borrow' nice photos no matter where they are hosted, so you are not relinquishing any control by uploading them to a community site. You don't have any real control to start with. Think Google images, so either choose to upload your images to the 'net, or don't. There are no degrees of freedom here.

I can still make a 10000x10000 image that is under 1MB in size... if we were to restrict on dimensions it would better fix this, but it would also prevent high quality uploads of schematics, etc.. for this forum, limiting the dimensions of images just wont work very well at all.
