I've now got an automated daily system backup to Amazon S3 and also another server, so please report if you see any degrading of server forum performance at any point.
There shouldn't be, but you never know...

What time does it fire off?
That would be telling. Also; placebo effect.

Placebo effect might not be the only problem..

If Dave said 10PM and everyone came online then to check out the forum speed the server would probably grind to a crawl just from the traffic checking it. And then it would start a backup  :-DD

Ha, I was just thinking to differentiate it from peak netflix time, my ISP etc.

The main site eevblog.com and the forum were inaccessible for me Dec 31, 2013 when I checked around 11:45AM MST to around 2:00PM.

I was able to go everywhere else during that time so it was not a local PC, ISP, DNS, etc problem.

It was dead about 2 hours ago ( last year) for me as well. In the morning at around 9AM my time it was really slow, only unread was available, all else timed out.

Hi
I also saw that this site was down for an hour or two (I check several times).

The interesting thing is that a different blog that I follow was also down during the same time period. The other blog was returning a site not accessible error from a CloudFare service page. I am not sure if this is related or not.

Yeah, I got a down report.
NYE is actually peak time for sysadmins, they take things down for maintenance, so that's likely what happened. Nothing to do with the backup which has been running fine for several days now.

I also noticed an extended down time this afternoon, which would have been the middle of the night in AUS. I'd imagine the first backup takes a long time, but subsequent backups should only include changes since the last one, and take a shorter amount of time.

Backup probably runs at around 08H00 GMT, as I have noticed a noticeable slowdown then.

Well you should tell. Just accidentally give them the wrong time, and read the reports with a smile on your face. Always amusing to see psychology in action. ;D Or was that psycology? ;)

I have been experiencing a lot of "Waiting for eevblog.com" the last few days. Don't know if it's related to backups or if it's something else but eevblog is the only site with this symptom.

A reload usually fixes the problem.

For two days the forum has been unreliable for me.

I would say about 30% of the time opening a forum link in a new window or tab will stall for about 5 seconds before opening the page and about half the time the page will be blank.

Marking messages as read also seems to be unreliable. Feels like a lot of database queries are failing.
